Conversations with Ida Fliggins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ida Fliggins.

Hi Ida, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
As the founder of Children of Promise Inc., mom of three, and licence Childcare Centers owner for the over 30 years helping children to succeed is my passion. I was inspired by my faith and the love and support from my late husband, Pastor Anthony Fliggins Sr that, I was sent here by God to serve others that are in need. I have a profound passion for children and their welfare. Having a strong level of compassion for individuals and families that are hurting and want a helping hand that what fuels my passion. Operating childcare for many years my passion and purpose deepen about the lack of educational support for impoverished families and their children. And also, I want to bring my creative mind in childcare crafts out into the community so I can connect with more children. So an idea came into my mind, and I started a back two-school giveaway. In our first event, we gave away 25 book bags with supplies and serve hot meals to the community. Its funny we only had 25 bags.

After wonderful feedback from the children and community neighbors. I decided that this fair should be an annual event. It puts joy into my heart when the children can not wait until the next event. Throughout the years planned this event along with my biggest supporter, my daughter Amanda Stokes (community event coordinator). This fair has grown from 50 attendees and up to 600 attendees a year. With the continue help and support from my family, neighbors, community helpers and my community association (Allendale Community Association) this fair will not be successful without their help. I so am thankful for their support.

How mission to ensure that children living in impoverished area in Baltimore City will receive essentials school supplies, including school uniforms throughout the school year. Having school supplies and school uniforms is a critical first step to help children to succeed and to improve academic performance.

We have served over 6000 hot meals to families in the community. As we all know that many families are facing finance hardship due to Covid- pandemic. We was able to provides families with schools supplies and supplies for e-learning’s last year, and we had a successful grab and go event. While preparing for that, we have started our new name for our yearly event Grab- A- Bag for Success. A bag that brings hope and opportunity for learning.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, in the beginning, trying to get to bring my vision or passion to life was a little hard. I had no knowledge about how to start a community non-profit. I had to do my research on how to start and be successful nonprofit. I applied the knowledge that I have learned and started Children of Promise Inc. As present time I still have many financing challenges. Most of the funds are from my own pocket. I love what I do its my passion to help others that keeps me grounded in my faith and hope for the best for me and others.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am also the owner of Christian Baby Stations childcare centers operating for 30 years. Located in West Baltimore, I am known for over-the-top decoration. For every holiday. My home is a holiday landmark. During the Christmas season, my yard is filled with more than 30 huge inflatables. Christmas is my favorite time of year.
