Conversations with Dayjana Watson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dayjana Watson.

Hi Dayjana, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Hello, my name is Dayjana and this is my story. Growing up in Baltimore City wasn’t the best, and my confidence wasn’t always there. People here have this narrative that you have to look and dress a certain way to fit in. I always thought I was beautiful, that was never an issue for me. It was hard maintaining that mindset when others try to break you down to make themselves feel better.

I have always been into social media, fashion, & anything beauty wise like makeup. As I got older, I explored my style and look. I dressed how I wanted and not how anyone else wanted me to. As time went on, I slowly got into makeup and taught myself everything I needed to know from watching YouTube videos and different beauty gurus.

I was really inspired by Aaliyah jay, Jackie Aina, Nyma Tang, etc. I tried not letting other people determine if I met their standards because it didn’t matter what anyone thought of me because I knew who I was and nobody could take that away from me.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It wasn’t always a smooth road being a black girl growing up. Getting picked on for how you wear your hair and how dark your skin might be or even how you dressed.

It was a time when I was in middle school and social media had a huge impact on kids back then. This moment had a huge impact on me as a person. I got picked me and back then it was post being made about me as a joke. Now, being 20 years old and looking back on the whole situation, i shouldn’t have let that impact me as much as it did back then. I’m thankful i never let that get in my way or stopped me from reaching my full potential of being the beautiful and talented young lady I’am today.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a makeup artist and not just any regular makeup artist. I don’t just specialize in one thing, i do so much more than that. I’m such a creative person and always been that way. I like to take makeup & my craft to other levels. Most makeup artists only specialize in “Soft Glams” or “Full Glams” but I’m different. I know how to do those looks but i wanted to offer more than just that. I wanted to push myself to do more and that’s what I did.

I did many creative looks and looks from different movies and different holidays. I’m known for pushing the limits of makeup, I step outside my box and never try to put myself in a box. I want to be known for more than just a makeup artist, I’m more than just that. I know my potential and I know I can go much further and that’s why I don’t limit myself.

I’m most proud of starting my makeup business and being able to show & give my city an experience that isn’t like no other. Also, growing my clientele and building bonds with so many different people. And not limiting myself to certain things and pushing myself to put my talents into different makeup contests and actually being able to come out a winner up against many other talented people.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I feel as though having the characteristics of being a creative, confident, & ambitious, person is most important to my success. If I didn’t have those characteristics & the determination and drive to keep going I probably wouldn’t have made it this far.

The creativity and confidence gave me a boost too. Being able to have the confidence and know who I am as a person takes you a very long way.
