Community Highlights: Meet Terri Lemere of Healthy Home Living Solutions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Terri Lemere.

Hi Terri, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I graduated from Towson University in 1996 with my master’s in Occupational Therapy. I have worked as an Occupational Therapist in many different settings – nursing home, assisted living, outpatient, hospital, school, and my favorite setting – my patients’ homes. When working with patients in their homes, my plan of care focused on helping my patient rehabilitate.

But along with treating the person, I always assessed their home environment too. Assuring that my patients’ homes are set up safely, and in such a way as to empower my patients to be as independent as possible is really half the battle in providing the best service as an Occupational Therapist! Last year, I decided to start my own business – Healthy Home Living Solutions, LLC. My husband and I built our own home almost three years ago, and it was very important to us that this would be our “forever home”. So we made sure to incorporate aging in place features in our home.

The services I provide with my business include home safety assessments through the lens of an experienced Occupational Therapist and Certified Aging in Place Specialist; a thorough report is provided to my clients listing solutions/my recommendations for home safety modifications; caregiver training (safety strategies, ways to help their loved one be as independent as possible, and fall prevention education. I’m in the process of adding more services to offer my clients!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wouldn’t say that running my business has been a smooth road. Aging in Place is a relatively new concept. However, the aging population is growing by leaps and bounds. According to WHO (World Health Organization) “By 2030, 1 in 6 people in the world will be aged 60 years or over.”

So, my biggest challenge has been educating people on the value of aging in place and living safely in their homes as they age. I’ve found that some people really “get it”, and some people don’t understand the urgency of assuring that their or their older loved ones” home environment is set up safely to meet their changing needs as they age. My business is a private-pay service. Unfortunately, insurance companies don’t currently pay for many preventative services.

Preparing to age in place is preventative, so at this time my clients pay for my services out-of-pocket. This has deterred some of my prospective clients, which is unfortunate because the investment in putting home modifications and aging in place concepts into place is far less than paying for a higher level of care such as assisted living or nursing home.

We’ve been impressed with Healthy Home Living Solutions, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Healthy Home Living Solutions, LLC provides home safety assessments – The home evaluation is a comprehensive tool that incorporates items, such as your needs and goals, how well you can accomplish your daily activities (based on the current configuration of your home), safety, fall prevention, accessibility (including assistive devices and durable medical equipment, such as wheelchairs), balance and more.

I also perform an in-home occupational performance evaluation (also known as a functional assessment). We also provide aging-in-place consultation, and collaboration with a remodeler to assure that any home modifications made are tailored to your particular needs. Caregiver education and training is a very important service that we provide – teaching a spouse, adult child, or any family caregiver about safety strategies, tips on helping your loved one be as independent and as strong as possible, and safe mobility methods.

One of the benefits of working with an Occupational Therapist is that I have the training and experience to understand how you interact with the features of your home, as well as, the nuances of how your body interacts with those features or other products in your home. This allows me to be very specific about how you can modify your home to make it better for your life.

As we go through this process together, my goal will be to educate you about these things. Then, show you how the changes that I suggest will empower you, make your daily tasks easier, and reduce the chances of you having an accident. What sets me apart from others is that I customize my solutions to YOUR physical and cognitive needs AND your personal goals. I treat each of my clients as if they were my own family member.

Brand-wise, what I am most proud of is that we provide hope and positivity. We come from a place of compassion and professionalism. We want the best for our clients because who doesn’t want to age successfully, happily, and safely?

What I’d like your readers to know about my brand, offerings, services, etc. is that once you reach out to me, I make it my job to either provide you with everything you need to age in place, and/or point you in the right direction for local resources that fit your needs.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I have mixed feelings about the concept of luck. I feel like what you put out into the universe comes back to you. So, I feel that experience and hard work have contributed to where I am today in life and in business. But, I do have to say that I feel very blessed. I have an amazing support system in my personal life and in my business life!

And my opinion is that if you experience “bad luck”, it’s all in how you react to it, and how you pivot. Resiliency is SO important – in life and in business!
