Community Highlights: Meet Nico Boone of NEUTRALDesigns

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nico Boone.

Hi Nico, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always been an artist. Any sheet of paper and pencil I could find, I was always sketching these imaginative ideas and bringing them to life. As I got older, my art began to shift, and I ran into a roadblock. I found that sketching wasn’t my thing anymore. I remember taking an advanced art class in high school where everyone was painting, sculpting, or crafting these phenomenal sketches. None of these art styles fit me. Shortly after, I found my craft. I found my style of design in graphic design. I began to craft all of those same imaginative ideas and form them in a more digital format. As I became more and more familiar with this different art software and processes, my craft grew, and I began to find my passion again. People started to notice my work, and sporadically they came to me to create digital art for them. I was excited at the opportunity and willing to be helpful. After making some phenomenal flyers and digital art designs, I had an epiphany. I l always had an entrepreneurial spirit, wanting to craft something and call it my home, build an empire from the ground up. I realized I could take my craft, my art, and turn this into a business. At this point, NEUTRALDesigns was born.

I continued to hone my craft. I would spend hours upon hours educating myself on color theory, typography, design principles, digital formatting, and everything I needed to know about graphic design. At the same time, I put all that practice and training into action. Whether it was a simple concept for a design, a color scheme I liked, or some form of branding I saw on the street, I took that and made it my own. As I continued doing that, my portfolio expanded, and my craft improved exponentially.

Once I was at a level of comfortability with my design skillset, I was aggressively building my clientele. It started with simple flyers for family and friends. It then turned into logos for small businesses and has now grown into complete branding design and consultation for established businesses and organizations. I pride myself on providing a service and an experience for my clientele. I often tell my clients the business is not just a logo; the business is a brand. It has to look as such, it has to be talked about, and most importantly, it must be showcased and promoted. Your business will attract more customers if it is showcased professionally. So that’s what I do. I helped not just with the design aspect of the business but also helped them to understand the branding and marketing of the business as well.

I’ve had the luxury of working with several small businesses, non-profit organizations, independent artists, and established figures. My business has grown exponentially over five years, and my skillset has been over the last ten years and continues to grow. Within the last few months, I’ve completed multiple design projects with various satisfied customers. NEUTRALDesigns is prospering, yet we are constantly innovating and innovating our process, expanding our clientele, and pursuing greater projects. The possibilities are endless.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wish to tell you it has been an easy road, but it has not. It’s been challenging at times. It’s been sleepless nights, extra hours, constant back-and-forth, and even mental anguish. There were times I needed more clients and needed income. Some projects were started and never completed due to clients dropping out. There are constant revisions and changes over a final product. As a designer, you often have to put aside your design principles for your client’s satisfaction. You have to promote yourself to be recognized constantly. You must also find the proper balance between professional and personal when working with your clients. It’s never easy. However, something worth doing is always challenging.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck has supported NEUTRALDesigns in many ways. They not only support my business but support me as an artist providing a service. Fate has provided me with access to educate myself to improve my skill set and business; luck has provided me with a sure list of clients who have been extremely wonderful to work with. Luck has also taught me to value these clients because losing clients is a real thing businesses experience. Luck has also taught me to respect myself as the artist behind the business and truly understand the value of my work and time.
