Community Highlights: Meet Meredith Heim of Ember + Sage Co

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meredith Heim.

Hi Meredith, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
2020, as we all know, was a pretty hectic year. I spent the entirety of it working at Mercy Medical Center in Downtown Baltimore amidst the pandemic as a cardiac sonographer, screening for COVID and assisting in the IT telemed department, helping patients who were at risk get in touch with their providers. Grateful to have been able to make a difference during this time, I found myself pretty burnt out.

Throughout my life I have always tried to be and stay creative, whether it be painting custom cornhole boards, murals or my own personal work. The lightbulb moment for starting a business was originally a travel company/community focused on supporting and equipping young women like myself who were interested in seeing the world, with travel itineraries to National Parks, GoPro and personal alarm rentals, safety and self-defense tips, etc. I spent a good portion of my early twenties scaring my parents to death taking solo trips out to Zion National park, hiking Angels Landing or taking the bus up to NYC to do doors-off helicopter flights. Adrenaline rush aside, these experiences did wonders for my self-confidence and perspective of how I see the world and the life ahead of me.

That is where ember + sage comes in. I’ve been seeing and hearing more often how unhappy friends, acquaintances, colleagues, etc, are with their bodies, self-image, and where they are in life. Most are taking all the ‘right steps’ but are still unfulfilled and stressed, including myself. I founded ember + sage specifically with this in mind. Our torso body candles, of all shapes, skin tones (7 shades and counting) and sizes, customizable with golden stretch marks, c-section scars, etc. are staples, encouraging women to not only be proud of the body they inhabit but to put these works of art on full display in their homes. I have also incorporated the travel bug within me into city/location-based woodwick candles, to be released this September.

Bottom line, I have spent a lot of time with my cardiology patients ages 65+ and I hear a lot of regrets and life advice. I am so happy with the work I am doing now and love hearing how happy my customers are with my unique products that I hope this venture will lead me to continue helping and encouraging others.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If this had been a smooth road, I wouldn’t want the story published because then it wouldn’t be a good or realistic one. It has been a lot of trial and error, long nights, rambling to my extremely patient and supportive boyfriend about my creative process, frustrating mishaps, and more. Consistency is the key with anything, and like my father has always told me, “Nothing worth having or doing will come easy.”

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Ember + Sage Co?
Ember + Sage specializes in eco-friendly home goods such as hand-poured soy candles, handcrafted ceramic vases, and personalized gifts. We are set apart from others and from big-name candle companies because we use all-natural components such as pure soy wax (in comparison to paraffin wax that is used by most large companies, which is petroleum-based, unsustainable and gives off toxic fumes), 100% cotton or recycled wood wicks, Phthalate-free fragrance oils, and exclusive biodegradable packaging.

Our torso and shape candles are zero waste with no container, and our woodwick candle vessels can be repurposed as a planter, bathroom container or insulated drinking glass. Instructions on how to clean, recycle and use products will be on our website blog. Our aluminum recycling program is also in action, where we accept good condition used cans and repurpose them as 12-16oz citronella candles, perfect for summer. I am proud of creating a brand that is honest and conscious of its environmental impact. We are also offering a 20% discount to VoyageBaltimore readers when they use the promo code BALTIMORE410 at

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Both of my parents are native Marylanders and I grew up locally. My favorite childhood memories include being outside, at a park, at home, or weekend trips to the beach. I love the state of Maryland, the city of Baltimore, and truly do see the CHARM in Charm City every day.
