Community Highlights: Meet Loocie Glover of Talooka Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christin ‘Loocie’ Glover.

Hi Loocie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, I’m Loocie, one of the founders of Talooka Studio, a branding design studio.

At Talooka Studio we use strategy to create visual identities for small businesses and social good organizations across a variety of industries, nationwide. Visual identity includes any imagery and graphical design that communicate a product or service, for example, logo designs, websites, social media design, advertisements, brochures, presentations, and so much more.
We started our business in 2018. While working at our 9-5 job, we all knew that we wanted autonomy so we thought about starting our own design agency. The original founders, Tanicia, Karadee, and I met every day after work for several months to plan.

We discussed our business plan, offerings, what expertise we all had to bring to the table, target audience, business name, and much more. We came up with the business name Talooka Studio; ‘Ta’ for Tanicia, ‘loo’ for Loocie and ‘ka’ for Karadee. With further research into this name, we found that Talooka is also a noun (in India) and means a group of several villages organized for revenue purposes. Perfect right?!

We continued to work at our 9-5 jobs while building Talooka Studio together for about a year. We worked with clients to help establish our process, to identify and utilize the strengths of each partner, and to identify the need in the market.

Up next: Our exit plan! Unfortunately, Karadee went back home to Thailand. Tanicia left first from our 9-5 to work full-time for Talooka Studio. Within that year, we were growing and thriving so I then left the job. Now in 2022, 2 years later, Talooka is still striving with all thanks to God, business partners, and a goal!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Yes, it has been a fairly smooth road for us. We like to take our time so we rarely make poor decisions for the company which we believe creates a smoother road to success. We are just getting started and we understand building a business comes with learning, developing new skills, and working together.

We’ve been impressed with Talooka Studio, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a Dynamic Duo! Co-founder, Tanicia B., specializes in brand strategy and project management while I, Loocie specialize in visual design and customer experience. We have over 20+ years of experience in brand identity, graphic, and web design. Together we share an appreciation for POC and woman-owned businesses, simplicity in design, structure in business, continued learning, and money!

Being a Black, Chamorro, Women-owned Design Studio and part of the LGBTQ+ community, we understand the importance of collaboration. We celebrate our individuality and life experiences which have contributed to our strategic thinking and creative designs. Working collaboratively helps improve productivity and gives our clients an opportunity to be a part of the process when working with us.

We are proud and grateful for all of the opportunities we’ve encountered as we are working with organizations in Seattle, Los Angeles, Portland (Oregon), New Mexico, Detroit, Chicago, Delaware, and of course the Baltimore/Virginia/DC metropolitan area and many more cities nationwide.

Getting seen by well-known organizations like Wunderman Thompson, ACLU DC, Substack, DC History Center keeps us motivated.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Talooka Studio is BLESSED! We’re still growing and prospering, all thanks to God. Sometimes we don’t know the outcome, but we don’t let the unknown stop us. We receive great opportunities and we take advantage of them.
