Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystle I. Myers.
Hi Krystle, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve never been a fan of conforming. I started my legal career in a very traditional fashion, completed law school, passed the bar, worked for a firm, and spent more time at work than actually living life. Those who know me knew it was only a matter of time before I remixed my legal career.
It is essential that my legal career be fulfilling, purposeful, and serve others. It is equally important for me to work according to my own rules.
After a few attempts at the traditional approach to practicing law, I began to have a burning in my belly for Business law and Intellectual Property law. The kind of burning that turns into excitement when searching trademark databases. I dissect the business moves of any company from a business perspective for fun; I become giddy, that kind of burning. I took this burning energy and founded Be Bossy, LLC in 2015. While not a traditional name for a law firm, I provide traditional legal services. Be Bossy, LLC’s primary focus is to help small to midsize business owners with their legal needs and offer clients an affordable flat-fee-based billing structure.
Last year when the pandemic hit, I must admit I was a little nervous about how my practice would be affected, but with people focusing on using the downtime to start or grow their business, I had my best year since starting the firm. Additionally, I found myself informally coaching entrepreneurs on general business practices and how to operate through a legal lens. This opened my eyes to another way to help small to midsize businesses and assisted me in finding what I call my sweet spot.
At the top of this year, I did a bit of brand shifting and launched Myers Law Group, LLC to provide one-on-one legal services in Business and Intellectual Properties solely. I transitioned Be Bossy, LLC into a coaching practice that provides courses for business owners to learn how to operate through a legal lens. This is the lane I created, and I’m loving it!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been kind of a trial and error journey to get to where I am today. I wouldn’t say it’s been a smooth road, but I would not change my journey at all. For a long time, I could only see myself practicing sports and entertainment law. After some time, I realized it wasn’t as fulfilling as I hoped it would be. The brutal honesty from that revelation was career shifting. After that discovery, I decided to transition to the public sector, something I never envisioned.
While interesting and rewarding in some ways, I had to be honest with myself again and say this is not how I envisioned or wanted my career to serve me. I’m a firm believer in living the life you want to live in every way, including career-wise; I still had not reached the point where I could say I was doing that until I launched my practice. As a solo practitioner (for now), I am often the front, back, and deep end. Selling potential clients on myself and my services, being the bill collector, working on my website, etc., is exhausting but, I always remind myself, “to whom much is given, much is required.”
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Myers Law Group LLC/Be Bossy, LLC?
Myers Law Group is a boutique law firm founded to help small to midsize businesses with their legal needs. Our primary practice areas are business law and intellectual properties. We understand that some small to midsize business owners shy away from retaining a business attorney due to the belief that they can’t afford the legal fees. With that in mind, we offer two fee structures to our clients – retainer-based and flat fee, and other resources to help reduce legal fees. Our one-on-one services include business registration, contract drafting and review, copyright registration, and trademark registration. Our clients operate across various industries and the for-profit and non-profit sectors. The legal needs of every business vary and require experience in a variety of industries. This is why I consider myself “The Attorney for Every Preneur”.™️
Another reason some entrepreneurs tend to shy away from the legal side is because they quite frankly don’t understand it or why it is essential to the success of every business. My philosophy is as a business owner, you should have enough legal knowledge to understand what factors to keep in mind when making business decisions. I am the daughter of an educator and an entrepreneur. Having both of those perspectives as a reference inspired me to marry the two and create a platform to teach entrepreneurs the legal aspects of the business. This moved me to transition Be Bossy to a subsidiary of Myers Law Group, where I provide business legal coaching to business owners at every stage of their business.
In October, we kick off the first cohort of our new 12-week mastermind course – Mind Your Own Bossness. I’m excited about the initial response I’ve received about the program (now enrolling) and about the opportunity to help others navigate crucial areas of entrepreneurship.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
As a native of Baltimore, I have witnessed the many phases of the City. I love how the City has grown up – new restaurants, hotels, attractions, more small businesses etc. You know, the charm in the City. Baltimore, while not flawless, has a lot of great things to offer residents and tourists alike. What I like least about our City is that in some ways there seems to be a loss of pride in the City.
When we take pride in our communities, and uphold our civic responsibilities to each other, we are able to create change in our neighborhoods. Stronger communities can rebuild what has been lost, which ultimately benefits us all.
