Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Amadi.
Hi Chelsea, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started doing makeup in 7th grade and it has always been something that I’ve been passionate about. I always talked about running my own makeup company in the future while practicing dermatology. When the pandemic hit, it gave me a lot of time to think about my future. I decided to get started on my dream early and began working on my brand. I wanted my brand to celebrate African American women and the beauty they possess. I also wanted my products to be of top quality and allow women to appreciate their individual beauty. I researched the ingredients needed to make the perfect formula of lipgloss, not too thick and not too sticky like the ones I usually found at the store. My goal was for my products to surpass what people were used to and I managed to get the perfect formula with a variety of colors and flavors to choose from. I have been able to expand my brand to other lip care products such as lip scrubs, lip oils and lip balms which are all handmade. Afroluxe also offers mink lashes which are very affordable and an unbeatable quality allowing all women to embrace their unique beauty. Lastly, I have expanded my brand to offering makeup services. Afroluxe is all about celebrating the beauty of a woman and I take pride in providing quality products and services to all over my customers and clients.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Being a young entrepreneur, it is very difficult to get people to believe in your vision. I started my brand at 17 years old and it was a lot of money that had to be invested in making it what I wanted. Thankfully, with the help of my parents I was able to pay for everything that was needed. It has mostly been a learning experience for me. I’ve learned that you have to spend money to make money. Sometimes I found myself getting discouraged because for a while, I was spending more money than I was earning. But I learned to be patient with everything as it fell into place.
As you know, we’re big fans of AfroLuxe Glam Shop. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
AfroLuxe specializes in cosmetic products, specifically lipgloss and lashes. I believe that the quality and affordability of our products sets us apart from others. People usually expect good quality products to come at a high price but it doesn’t have to be that way. I am most proud of my brand’s inclusivity. I want everyone to feel welcome by AfroLuxe. I am always open to new ideas, suggestions and criticism and I take them very seriously when making decisions. It is still a small business and I am still learning and I believe AfroLuxe has so much potential.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My biggest advice to anyone who wants to start a business is to keep being patient and to never give up. It can be so easy to get tired and want to stop everything with all the expenses that get acquired and all the time that is required but in the end, persistence is key. You will see result of your work and see that everything was not in vain. Always have your goal in mind and you will get there.
