Check Out Troy “DJ TNYCE” Richardson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Troy “DJ TNYCE” Richardson.

Hi Troy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Sheesh, it’s hard to talk about myself! I grew up between Maryland and North Carolina, splitting time between my mom and dad. I started DJing when I was 15. I lived in a small town in NC at the time, and I had the best mentor ever. From there, I traveled with him to school dances, Pow-wow parties, and eventually clubs and weddings, gradually getting better over the years.

I was eventually able to afford my own gear and continued DJing for parties, weddings, and corporate events while I was in the Navy. Once I was done serving, I moved here to Maryland and pretty much continued what I was doing, just here in the DC, Maryland, Virginia areas, sprinkled in with some NC events by referral as well!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a serious rollercoaster ride for sure. I’m at the point now where I’ve been around the world and back figuratively and LITERALLY. In this business, it’s almost a “rite of passage” to struggle in some way or another. Coming from a small town, and moving around A LOT, my biggest struggle has always been questioning “where do I fit in?”

Over the years, constantly moving between MD, VA, and NC, I’ve conditioned myself to be able to get along with anybody and adapt to any situation. So much so, that it kinda works against me. It’s kinda like I fit everywhere, but nowhere. If that makes sense. I’m also very introverted until I actually get to know people.

Then I won’t shut up.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an “Open Format” DJ before anything else. I play a lot of hip-hop, R&B, Dancehall/Reggae, Go-Go, and Baltimore Club music, along with throwbacks from just about any genre.

I’m super proud that coming from Hollister, NC, I’ve been able to hold my own in rooms with absolute legends, and of course all of the amazing DJs here in the DMV area. What sets me apart from many other DJs is being able to adapt to almost any situation, and that I will never stop being a student of the craft.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My friends and family are more than anything. My wife and my kids are the best. With all of my internal struggles on fitting in different places at every point of my life, they are truly home for me, and I love it.
