Today we’d like to introduce you to Priyanka W.
Hi Priyanka, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Henna or Mehndi is a significant part of Indian tradition & Culture. While growing up in India, I was introduced to this beautiful ancient art by my mother. During my teenage years, I used to practice Henna designs on my own with old techniques taught by my mother. At the age of 15, I had my first “basic henna designing” class with a local Henna Artist. During all this time, I was pursuing “Henna Art” just as a hobby. I had almost lost touch with henna after stepping into my undergrad.
Henna re-entered my life after I had my son. At that point of time, I was looking for something that will allow me to have as much time as I want to spend with my child, yet it will keep me engaged in a productive way. It was then I realized the demand of henna art around the DC area & began offering henna designing service. Soon after, I learned the true potential of Henna artwork & I opted to go for an advanced Henna designing course.
After getting trained under professional Henna Artists, “Bridal Henna” has become my forte & “Charming Henna” came into existence.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Around 8-10 years ago finding the right mentor was a bit of a struggle in states. I was fortunate to visit back home (India) & find the best mentor in my hometown, under whom I learned advanced practices of Henna designing. During this time, I was not able to have a family life for quite a long time. I used to spend 8-10 hours each day practicing henna designs & its detailed elements.
Creating precise designs by maintaining creativity & measurements in mind, is an intellectually challenging job. Practicing Henna designs is physically challenging too, as one needs to sit in a certain position for long hours to get the designs right.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

My diligence & professionalism in work made Charming Henna popular & in demand Bridal Henna Service in Washington DC & around the area. I provide henna service not only for the brides and weddings but also for various Occasions & Corporate events of all sizes. I also do henna crowns for patients suffering through alopecia OR chemo & conduct Henna Workshops. My love & passion for henna art drives me as an Artist.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Nowadays Social media is full of a variety of artisans. Being a beginner, it could be difficult to know where to start from & whom to follow. This may make you lose your unique henna design styling & your identity as an Artist. So anyone willing to turn their “henna art” love into a profession must have training for the same, under appropriate guidance from qualified mentors. Find one who would polish your skills without damaging your unique creation style. Learning advanced techniques from artistically qualified trainers has helped me overcome my drawbacks & provided guidance on how to establish the Henna art Business.
