Check Out Keshawn Boone’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keshawn Boone.

Hi Keshawn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Konfident Kreations and Events was born in January 2018 and it was God-given to me. Since I was a kid, I would only dream of being a part of the design world. Back in high school, I would tell my friends that I am going to become an interior designer and even then, I knew that one day I would own my own company. I was told by my parents that I reminded them of my grandmother Margaret, who was a serial entrepreneur and that I was always a bossy/independent at a young age. I guess it was in my blood to become who I am today!

When I had my daughter at 15 everyone started to doubt my bright future and thought I would become just another statistic. This made me work harder because I felt I had to prove to everyone that I could still achieve every goal I had prior to my circumstances of being a teen mom. I still went to school every day and graduated on time with so many honors. I moved out and got my first apartment at 18 yrs. old, as a single mom to a 3 yr. old, working a full-time job and going to college part-time. In 2010, I graduated from Medix School of Towson and became a dental assistant. I knew it was not my passion but I knew it would be stable income for my daughter and I. I got tired of working extremely hard for little to nothing, and dealing with companies/dentists who didn’t appreciate my skills or knowledge. I needed an outlet so I started thinking of what would make me happy long term. In my spare time, I would decorate for my daughter birthday parties and friends and family events. I’ve always been the crafty girl who created different D.I.Y.s, gift baskets, personalized wine glasses, etc. I would make centerpieces that could be used as home decor and someone mentioned me making them for a wedding. That made a light bulb go off in my head to give it a try and service the event planning industry. I started making gift sets to advertise at work and with family and friends who purchased them. I got hired to do my first baby shower in Feb of 2018 and it took off from there. I started with $0 and a prayer. My spouse and daughter would help me to do setups. The more clients I picked up, the more I thought of an escape plan from my job at the time. I got new jobs only to be more stressed, depressed, and undervalued. It’s like God was making me uncomfortable for a reason that I couldn’t even see. I would come home and cry to my spouse because I couldn’t take the pressure at work and I had clients to tend to as well. I had no idea what it took to run a business and didn’t think it would happen so fast. I struggled with feeling incompetent and worried that I would fail. I struggled with packing everything into my little clown car for events. But I knew I wanted it badly and I needed it more than I needed to work for anyone else.

During the pandemic, we were sent to work from home and I heard God tell me it was time to do what he wanted me to do and that was to be 100% dedicated to KKE. I literally took a leap of faith and planned to drive for Uber for extra money if needed. June of 2020, I quit my full-time job to transition into full-time entrepreneur. Nov of 2020, I opened my very own venue space where clients can host their own events and I can decorate for them if needed. April of 2021, I purchased my very own work van to transport equipment for event setups. Today I have a team of employees and vendors who help my business to constantly grow. It’s like a secret door opened up when I quit my job and everything fell into place. I just recently became a certified/accredited event designer with the Institute of Wedding & Design. I feel that the more I continue to invest in myself, my business will continue to reap the benefits. I am so proud of where we are, where we’re going and how we continue to help others celebrate life and create memories with their loved ones.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all! As I mentioned earlier, my first struggle was not having any startup money or real knowledge of how to run a business. That alone has put me in some troublesome places with my business. One of my biggest obstacles was transportation because I would have to try and fit balloons, boxes, totes, etc into my tiny car just to go and setup an event. I would get very frustrated packing/unpacking large props, tables, and chairs and it would make me change my vision of particular events. At that time, I couldn’t afford to rent from Uhaul so I had to make it work. Another obstacle was funding, I couldn’t find any financial assistance so everything I made went right back into the business. I couldn’t pay myself or those whose helped me with decorating events.

It was also challenging getting people to trust my work enough to book us because I didn’t have the clientele that I have now or enough experience to back up what I was offering them. Most of the time clients would inquire and then when I quote a price they would decline. It’s times I didn’t have not one booking in a month but I just kept finding ways to promote my business daily. I stayed consistent with advertising and networking to spread the word about who we are.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a full-service event planning company where we provide decor services for a variety of events that range from babyshowers to weddings. We specialize in balloon artistry, tablescapes, dessert displays, backdrops, and much more. We are known for designing custom centerpieces and our balloon designs. We also have a small intimate studio space-The Studio at 411 which can hold up to 40 guests for all event types. Konfident Kreations and Events also curated The Motivational Myxer, which is now an annual women’s brunch to help other women and entrepreneurs set goals for each new year. It also provides a platform for new women business owners to network and sell their products.

We are most proud of growing our business from the ground up with little to no help! Also, for staying motivated during difficult times and providing exceptional services to our clients. We are proud of the relationships we’ve built with clients and team members who’ve turned into family. Also, the opportunities we have given to other entrepreneurs to be able to promote their businesses at our quarterly vendor events.

We are set apart because we have a lot of options to offer a client. We’re like a one-stop shop where all you have to do is show up to your event and enjoy it! We put our clients first and listen to their needs. We also like to make sure each event is executed to capture their personalities and visions.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I loved going over my aunt house on weekends as a kid. She let us play in her makeup and clothes, she gave us large sleepovers with all of my cousins, and would cook us a big breakfast before we left. We always had freedom to play and enjoy ourselves.

I also liked going to church to hear the choir sing, it always made me feel good and since then I’ve loved all types of music! After church service, our family gathered to spend time together as well which was always a great feeling. These small memories let me know that we can do whatever we put our minds to. We can always be who we want to be and that God is always there to support us!
