Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Rocz.
Jake, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
GUT formed in December for 2025, all through chance, or destiny depending on how you look at it. Our Drummer, Matt King, and guitarist , Caleb Taylor, met through mutual friends for a jam session. After one jam together they knew they had some chemistry but needed a bass player and vocalist. From there they recorded a video of them jamming and through it up on youtube and the holly grail that is Craiglist, which is how, Mike Thompson (bass) and vocalist, Jake Rocz found the two.
Mike met the two for a jam and hit it off, while Jake sent in a video of his vocals over their jam session.
We really came to together through our love for similar music and age, we are all over 30, have jobs ands partners at home, but all were looking for that avenue of creation at the same time and found that, while actually loving each other as people which is a major plus.
Since forming we pushed ourselves to write 5 songs off the bat and be show ready by February, so only 2 months after meeting each other. We have recorded our first demo track called Mirrors and have our EP called UNDONE in the process of recording. We currently have a pretty stack summer of shows including one the Power Plant and Ottobar.
We are on a constant evolution of our sound but our really influences come from the hardcore and punk scene in Baltimore and the glory days of myspace Grindcore, Slam, and Metalcore.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Our struggles really come from being adults and having life out of being in a band. Since we all have full time jobs, partners and Mike has kids plus we live in different parts of the city so our practices really happen on the weekend.
For example, two hours into the first day recording our EP UNDONE, Mike got a call from his Wife that his son got appendices and had to leave. Sometimes life throws curves balls and you just gotta roll with and adapt.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
When creating music you are always learning.. Since we are all met this year coming together to create allows us to learn about each other in a very unique/vulnerable way. I think because its the music that brought us together, we are incredibly driven and push each other in different directions and styles we might not normally be comfortable with.
In just two months we put together and set and played our first show and not even a year into coming together landing some pretty awesome venues this summer. I think what sets us apart is not wanting to be one thing, we as a group love some many sub genres of heavy music, and every “core” there is, so for us its all about coming up with a way to incorporate them all in a groovy, brutal, and chaotic way. We can play punk to black metal and not afraid to do figure out how to do it in one song.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Being authentic to ourselves and not being boxed into one idea
