Today we’d like to introduce you to Elrody Martin Jr.
Hi Elrody, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started Bliss Dance Company in 2014. I originally wanted to create an avenue for someone like me. Someone that was told no so many times as a male dancer because I was not masculine enough or I was not as fit. I also wanted to bring the “majorette” style of dance to the DMV area as it is mostly known in the south.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The road is never smooth. It’s always a process to get to where you want in life. The success of it is determined by how you handle the bumps in the road. The main struggle I faced was the lack of confidence I had in myself.
Everyone around me always had more confidence in my work than I had. I would second guest myself on almost every decision I made. I leaned on my best friends to give me the boost. Until one day, I lost almost everything and the thing I could do to grow was believe in myself. I gained a lot of self-confidence that day.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a CEO of a Dance company. The company is a Majorette-based company that trains in other styles of dance. We are known for bringing the field to the stage. I am most proud of simply accomplishing a goal I had as a child and sticking to my dreams.
