Check Out Courtney Tonelson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Tonelson.

Hi Courtney, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
As a child, I always loved to create and draw. This flourished even more when I went to Patapsco High and Center for the Arts for their Art Magnet program. Sadly, life caught up with me and my hobby of creating art was put on the back burner until the Pandemic happened. I found myself needing to fill a creative void again so I turned to watercolor which I really enjoyed while being an art student.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Creating art is never a smooth road. There are some days where I don’t want to pick up my paintbrush because my hand is aching or my neck hurts. On those days where I pick up my paintbrush despite the pain, I feel that my art suffers a little bit. It is a cycle of taking a step away and taking a second or third look and fixing the mistakes.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Being a watercolor portrait artist, I love that I get to know people without actually meeting them. I always tell my clients that I feel like I got to know their grandfather or their mother as I painted them for a few hours. I am most proud when I am able to bring loved ones together with family members who have passed in one painting. Piecing each individual strategically can be like a puzzle, but when it all comes together, it feels like you are creating a new memory in their life.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
My advice for networking is to use social media. Social media has helped me so much for networking and getting my art business going. You have to set time aside each day to work on it and stay on top of all your social media outlets.
