Check Out Carla Pressley’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carla Pressley. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Carla Pressley is a DC based hairstylist and makeup artist. A mixed chick born the year of the dog with a cancer sign and loves dogs! She laughs exactly her two brothers, tries eating vegan most of the time, practices yoga, and tears up every time the father of the bride see’s her for the first time. She grew up in small towns and military bases and is a proud army brat! Her career started in the beauty industry over 15 years ago in a salon and makeup store. Past Clients include Project Runway, Macy’s, Tarte, Marc Jacobs, RuPaul, and Martha Stewart Weddings and more. Highly reviewed for creating a calming environment with passion for working with all walks of life, skin tones, and hair textures. Other passions include Black Lives Matter, LGBTQIA rights, the environment and all earth’s creatures, self-care, and love. She has a lot of experience working in the fashion industry but now focuses on weddings and special events. You can find Carla all over the DMV as she is a mobile hair and makeup service with a growing team of artists.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Hiring high-quality folks to help me with things like legal matters, systems and operations, marketing, and workflows would have been the main thing for me. I had to figure out a lot on my own. In retrospect, knowing how much of my time it cost me to figure things out along the way and how much money was lost because of that, I would go back and tell myself four years ago to hire the best and to invest the money. I have been busy from the moment I started my company. There has been no slow build-up. I asked, marketed, and received. I just didn’t plan to receive so much and wasn’t completely prepared for it. I am now feeling great about my systems and everything I have put into place.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
People come to me for my light-handed glamorous looks. Many of my clients are not looking for transformations but rather an enhancement of their own beauty. I work with all skin tones and hair textures which also makes me unique. I like to think I am an expert at consultations as well. I used to teach a class on this to a company with over 500 hairstylists so it’s ingrained in me. I love to problem solve and offer solutions. Most of all, I love to make people feel fabulous.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I think the industry will be booming quite a bit. Solo professionals will be building teams like myself and many junior artists will have a mentor and company to back them up. Makeup companies will continue to improve natural and paraben free formulas. There will hopefully be a ban on animal testing and more and more big name artists such as Danessa Myricks and Pat McGrath will become a household names. Younger girls will experiment with makeup and I believe men as well. Men in Asian countries wear some amount of base and cover up makeup. It’s quite normal…I think that could be something we see in the future in America.
