Check Out Barbara Bowers’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Bowers.

Hi Barbara, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hello! Thank you for taking the time to speak with me. My name is Barbara Bowers. I spent most of my early career in EMS, running calls on ambulances and helping the community. In time, I moved off the ambulance and into the billing office. When my position was outsourced, I took my career into my own hands and developed Lancaster Wax Co in 2019. My husband suggested that I needed a hobby, so our business was born after taking a candle-making class with my Aunt. Learning everything about wax, candles, and running a small business, I grew it into a six-figure company in just over three years.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would be lying if I said it was a completely smooth road. Of course, there have been some bumps along the way. Initially, it was narrowing my aesthetic and offerings, testing to ensure we offer a quality product with numerous variations to meet the customer demand. We are always open to searching for new locations to feature our product, be it wholesale or retail. As with any business operating today – supply and sourcing issues have presented a struggle – however, we pride ourselves on being able to adapt and overcome. The past two years prove that when retail locations shuttered, we could pivot to online/social media selling and expand our wholesale offerings to be featured in subscription boxes.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We offer small-batch hand-poured Soy Wax Candles with cotton wicks and fragrances that are vegan and phthalate-free. We pride ourselves on sourcing most of our products from our state of Pennsylvania. Our entire business path has been paved with bootstraps and perfectly timed connections. I am very fortunate, and I recognize this. When Covid shut the world down and we were all placed on lockdown, my husband came to me with an idea for a specific line to be part of Lancaster Wax Co. He wanted to create candles that were customized for the RPG niche. He is a huge tabletop role player. Essentially, his idea was that they are candles with a surprise set of gaming dice inside. He also wanted to make wax melts with vintage pewter figurines hidden inside. He challenged me to trust him. So I indulged him, and together we created our ‘Dice Goblin” line.

So, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you before we go? How can they support you?
We love when we see our products shared on social media! Tag us – show us how you decorate or tell us your favorite product! And, of course, we love to chat with other business owners about the wholesale/retail aspect of offering our products in your store!

Wow so proud of this woman! I have known her for some time and so happy to see her and her husband flourish in the new company that they have built. I am sure I will order candles from her company.
