Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Fox.
Hi Emma, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, I was always fascinated with live entertainment and the music industry. Concerts were my happy place, and every aspect of the live performance was always so intriguing to me. I loved this environment so much. I dreamed of being able to be a tour manager, a music photographer, or a music journalist as a full-time career, but I never thought I’d be able to make it happen. While at college in January of 2022, I decided to give it a try. I created my own music blog called Unplugged with Emma and started writing reviews of concerts I had attended in the past, new music releases, and included photos that I’d taken with my phone. The blog started to get some traction, and I decided I really wanted to give photography a shot. I felt that living in a big city like Philadelphia for college gave me the perfect opportunity to do that. In September of 2022, my brother gave me his old camera so I could try to shoot my first show. Using photos, I had taken on my phone, I made a simple tweet to one of my favorite bands about the possibility of a photo pass, and I got approved! It all took off from there as I began to work with a publication called PopEntertainment, where my concert reviews and photos have been published. My work has continued to expand over the past few months as I’ve begun photographing for drag queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race, which has opened up a whole new world for me as a photographer.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have been extremely lucky to have had it be a smooth road so far. The biggest challenge I faced in the beginning was confidence. Pursuing music photography was something I’d wanted to do for so long, and all I wanted to do was succeed. It was hard to stop comparing myself to others and trust my own abilities. This got easier once I had shot my first couple of shows, as it became clear that this is what I was meant to be doing. Another difficulty I continue to face is learning how to balance being a full-time college student while also dedicating enough time and attention to my photography and concert reviews. Though this is still a challenge for me, I understand that these are all necessary steps in order for me to build my portfolio and reputation in the industry. I know that it won’t always be smooth sailing and that there will be challenges down the road, but I’m hopeful that all the effort I am putting in now will pay off in the future.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a freelance music and drag photographer, as well as a blogger. Additionally, I write articles for the publication PopEntertainment. I specialize in capturing the essence and emotion of a performer through my photos and my writing. Part of what I enjoy so much is the connection between myself and the artist through the camera lens. I am so grateful to have the ability to tell a story with my photos and bring the reader directly to the show through my words. Each live performance is unlike any other, and I love being able to capture the intimate details of such a unique experience. One thing that will never change is my passion for what I do. Each show I attend feels like my first concert all over again, and the excitement truly never ends for me.
What do you think about luck?
I feel like luck has played an important role in my life and in my business. I’ve been so fortunate so far in my endeavors that I definitely feel like the universe has had my back. However, I also work hard for each opportunity that comes my way. It’s an industry full of competition, so it’s always nice to have luck on my side, but there’s also an element of gratitude and professionalism that balances out the luck.
Luck also plays a huge role in my personal life. I’ve been extremely lucky to have such an amazing support system of family and friends who support and encourage me every step of the way.
