Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan McCrea.
Hi Megan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Megan McCrea, and I am a lifelong Maryland resident. I live with my husband and 3 daughters in Prince George’s County, MD, about halfway between Annapolis and Washington, DC. I run a page on Instagram called “Maryland Kid Adventures” (@md.kid.adventures), where I share family-friendly outings, events, local businesses, etc. I started the page during the pandemic in March of 2021 – I had recently had my 3rd daughter, and we had a goal of getting out and exploring daily with her and her twin sisters (age 2.5 at the time). I often posted about these outings on my personal page and got a lot of interest from friends and family asking for more information about the places we visited. I realized there was a need in this area for parents to be able to find things to do with their kids. But not just ideas – ALL the details. “Are there bathrooms?”, “what’s the parking situation?” and “how much does it cost?’. I wanted to include all the things that I worried about when planning outings with my kids in hopes of making it easier for other parents do to the same! This page started as just something to share with family and friends, but quickly gained a lot of interest and grew to where it is today. I never expected to be sharing ideas on this large of a platform, but it has been an amazing experience and motivated us to continue exploring all over Maryland and beyond.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The hardest part of this process for me has been managing the fast growth of my page and learning the ropes of being a content creator. Because I never set out for the page to take off like this, I knew nothing about creating social media content and have been learning as I go ever since. I still learn new things almost daily about video and photo editing, web page development, etc.
The other major challenge is balancing my time as a stay-at-home mom and keeping up with creating content as well. My kids are always my first priority, and I often have to put things aside to make sure I am focusing my attention on them as much as possible.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In addition to posting about playgrounds, kid-friendly events, and play spaces, I also offer promotion for local businesses, restaurants, and more! I love visiting local businesses and creating content both for their use and to share with my audience.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I love using Google Maps to find new parks and playgrounds to explore.
My favorite podcast is Crime Junkie.
