Meet Erin Shea

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Shea.

Hi Erin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My name is Erin! I was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, and came to Baltimore when I turned 18. I spent the first few years here finding myself and discovering what truly inspired my heart. I was always fascinated by the culture of tattooing and knew making art for people that made them feel more like themselves was my dream. I began my apprenticeship in the spring of 2018 at a small private owned studio in Fells Point. In the fall of 2021, I began my residency as a full-time artist. You can now find me over at Love Struck Tattoo in Annapolis!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh I wish. Trying to find an apprenticeship from 2015-2018 was extremely difficult. Tattooing has seen a major shift in the last few years, specifically with women and non-binary tattooers beginning to take over this scene. Unfortunately, a lot of the shops I hung out in weren’t interested in teaching a woman to be a tattooer. Once I was tattooing, I worked in a shop that was taking serious advantage of me. They took me in not knowing any better and told me this is just how things go. When they in fact, was not how things should be going. Always remember be thankful and grateful for the opportunities handed to you, but keep in mind YOU’RE the one showing up and putting in the work. Never let anyone hold that over your head.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in fine-line black and grey tattoos. I love tattooing floral themes, but especially ornamental pieces that beautifully contour the body’s natural curves and muscle lines. I LOVE tattooing “non-traditional” tattoo placements. I love tattooing nipples, sternums, and necks. I find myself most proud of being able to provide people with a service that is so intimate for the both of us. I am quite literally cutting open your body and leaving my mark behind. When clients tell me after a tattoo is over, they feel more like themselves it truly warms my heart. Giving people confidence in their skin is an honor.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Find someone who inspires you, and you can look up to. Spend time getting tattooed and hanging around shops that promote values and missions that align with your heart. Finding a mentor is difficult and is a special bond between two people that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Knowing where you’re valued is key. You are an asset; you provide skill, knowledge, and drive. A true mentor learns just as much from you as you do from them.
