Today we’d like to introduce you to Edward Hill.
Hi Edward, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My name is Ed Hill, and I have over 35 years of experience in the field of Technology. I attended Brooklyn Polytechnical Institute and Syracuse University, where I received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. After graduation, I worked as a Systems Analyst for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in New York City and pursued a career as an Actuary, and Systems Analyst. It did not take long for me to realize that my true passion was in entertainment. After working in a corporate environment for 5 years, I decided to pursue a career as a restaurateur and comedy promoter. I opened Mama’s Kitchen @ Indigo Blues on 46th Street in New York where it gave many rising comics an opportunity to showcase their talents. Several years later, I opened CADE’s Café, a restaurant in Baltimore, MD, however, I could not stay away from my technical roots, so I began a career at Sylvan Learning Systems / Laureate Education Inc. For the next nineteen years, I worked in every aspect of education and technology; Instructor, Program/Curriculum Developer, Information Technology Director, and finally Vice President of Technology. In my role as VP, I managed the technical backbone of campuses and online universities in California, Arizona, Florida, New Zealand, Italy, and Europe.
In my travels through Switzerland, I was able to view first-hand a 5-star restaurant that was completely run by the students. This hands-on training facility also served as a functioning business. I wanted to create that in Baltimore.
After retiring in 2016, I put my love of mentorship and technology into practice, creating BMore Inc. (Friends Grille and Central City). BMore Inc. trains and hire individuals in the field of hospitality, technology, and customer service.
It has always been my passion to train individuals in the Field of Hospitality and have the business to hire them. This was why Friends Grille was created, a local, neighborhood restaurant in Pigtown.
Currently, I still work in the field of Technology at AccelerEd LLC., managing a team supporting a 100,000 + student institution’s ERP, and Faculty Systems.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business always has its struggles. Of course, capital is one, however, trying to explain your vision as a school/workforce development/restaurant site/real-estate company can create other challenges.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I currently work in the Field of Technology while pursuing my passion of helping others. To have a talent in Technology and a passion for cooking while helping others is extremely exciting. I’m most proud of working my way up a Corporate Structure and providing assistance around the Globe but taking that experience and transitioning it to having direct contact with individuals that need it the most and making them self-sufficient is most rewarding.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
Make your path; your walk is your walk. If it is revealed to you, take suggestions, but make your decisions, live with them, you will make mistakes, but those mistakes will make your walk that much more rewarding.
