Meet Cecilia and Scott Fix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cecilia and Scott Fix.

Hi Cecilia and Scott, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
Both Scott and I have always had a love for travel and adventure. In fact, I would say it is this shared passion for collecting unique travel stories and experiences that drew us closer to one another. Not everyone would describe their ideal vacation as taking overcrowded public transportation to a remote jungle just to sleep in a treehouse. We found our perfect travel partner in each other, and that’s where it all started.

Through our “dating phase,” we toured Europe, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, and explored the most haunted place in Costa Rica. After marriage, we ate our way through Jamaica and scuba-dived through the Philippine islands. A year into COVID-19, we welcomed a little boy into our family. We did not let this slow us down one bit. Within his first 7 months, we hiked 6 different mountains covering over 30 miles of trails. We just returned from his first international trip to Italy, during which time we announced that we are expecting a baby girl in February!

Some may think that kids are a hindrance to travel. In contrast, they have been a large inspiration for the “next chapter” of our adventure story.

It is important to us that we instill in our children a sense of wonder, curiosity, and of course adventure. Many people tell us “Why travel so much when your kids are young? They won’t remember anything.” While it is true that they may not retain these memories at such an early age, exposure to new places, people, and cultures builds character. At almost 2 years old, our son is patient and adaptable, qualities that have certainly been refined during long road trips and plane rides. He is curious and confident, qualities that can be linked to exploring the outdoors and unfamiliar places.

As we continue to grow our family, which includes our “adventure dog” Huckleberry, we are committed to providing them with as many opportunities as possible to experience life and pursue adventure.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not all of our big goals and dreams have turned out the way that we imagined. We invested 2 years into converting a 2013 Sprinter van into an RV. It wasn’t until we had spent around $14k and a significant amount of our time that we realized neither of us knew what we were doing. We had no background in carpentry, plumbing, or wiring, and we knew no one with those skill sets who could help us. Shortly after, we both landed desk jobs. Although we both love our careers, this officially ended our dreams of becoming digital nomads and living out of an RV.

Learning to balance long-term stability with spontaneous adventure is not always easy, however, having a family has been a bit of a “guiding star”. We are committed to providing our family with an opportunity to choose happiness in their future. This might mean attending college, or maybe it means foregoing a graduate degree to pursue entrepreneurship. Perhaps it is a different lifestyle and pathway entirely. Whatever they decide, we are committed to doing all that we can do to set them up for success so that they have the option to choose a life that makes them happy.

This is where the balance of stability and spontaneity come in. We have followed the “American Dream” lifestyle of securing a stable career, purchasing a home, and saving for our future. Simultaneously, we choose to infuse our lives with bits of adventure travel to expand our worldview and inspire grander thinking.

This balance does not come easy. It takes time, purposeful planning and often involves choosing between competing priorities. Although we wanted to become digital nomads living out of an RV, we also knew that we were planning to start a family soon. We wanted to grow roots and choose a pathway that would set our family up for success.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We have documented our adventure story from the moment we began traveling together. Our website Lovicarious.com captures our stories from the different periods in our life from dating to marriage and now to family life.

We have always believed that adventure is everywhere and that it can be for everyone. It does not have to be an intimidating thrill-seeking activity. Rather, adventure is any activity that is exciting and new. It’s these experiences that push our boundaries to learn more about ourselves and the world around us.

Many of our adventures involve travel, however, others involve simply learning a new skill, trying a new food, or saying “yes” to a new experience. In sharing our stories, tips, recommendations, and photos, it is our hope that we can inspire others to discover their own great adventures no matter what stage of life they are in.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
