Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Bregel. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Sarah started writing 13 years ago and never stopped. As a young mom without a community, she wrote in order to have an outlet. She found her voice that way, but over time, she became more interested in how important it was to tell the truth about all things that her life as a married mother entailed — even the gritty and unpleasant parts. She wrote about her marriage, her mental health, her divorce, and her dating life with a down-to-earth yet bold, truth-teller approach. Women sought her out to ask questions about their own marriages, and she found herself often feeling like a guide for women who were seeking something just out of reach, even if they didn’t know what.
Sarah began teaching writing workshops and helping other women find their own voices and sometimes, their own truths. She is now an editor for the national website Little Things, where she often documents her relationship struggles and her single mom life. She’s written for Vice, Parents, New York Magazine, The Washington Post, In Style, and more, and is working on her first book.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a mom, or a single mom, at that, who writes about her struggles isn’t easy. I’ve gotten a lot of judgment for things I’ve written. I’ve also struggled with my mental health more than I’d like to admit. But it’s been an important part of my journey, which I’ve shared openly in my work. I feel it serves a purpose, and the pieces I’ve written about mental health and often the ones people need to read the most. I’ve learned how to manage my mental health, but I’ve also learned how to harness it to write more honestly and about things that matter. Writers also deal with a ton of rejection, but if you have something to say that you feel is important, you have to keep writing. No matter what.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a freelance writer and editor who loves to overshare, but not in the conventional way we so often do. I think it’s more valuable to share the tough parts of life and love, the mental health struggles, the heartbreaks.
Any big plans?
I’m working on my first book about divorce and being a solo woman.
