Meet Ifeoma Atueyi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ifeoma Atueyi.

Hi Ifeoma, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a self-taught abstract artist from Baltimore, Maryland who enjoys creating artwork to inspire viewers to dive into a space that allows inner reflection – embracing who you are.

I thought healthcare was always my destiny until I discovered my suppressed talents. I am Nigerian so education and having a lucrative career have always been “necessities” as part of the culture. I was laid off in 2020 and decided to apply myself in a different light. Growing up, I have always had a creative side and loved my art classes so it came naturally. I started painting on canvases with my kids. I loved it so much that I started painting by myself. This was how I knew painting is not a hobby!

I created so many pieces and decided to open a social media account. I received so many compliments/support and felt bold to host a solo exhibition for myself. I think this was how doors opened for me. I love learning, I love my journey and I am excited about the possibilities.

There is this feeling of freedom and gratitude I had and I am happy to say I still feel that. I feel blessed to practice pharmacy and create beautiful paintings for homes and businesses.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has been rough! Balancing my time with my beautiful family, my full-time pharmacy career, painting, and social media has not been easy. However, my journey is totally worth the challenge. Discovering this side of me is satisfying and I am proud to be here today.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a self-taught contemporary abstract artist. I love using different types of mediums and unconventional tools to create my pieces.

I use texture to create a three-dimensional effect to draw the viewer in, colors to highlight the beauty in imperfection or perfection, and patterns to create movement. Most viewers ask if they could touch the painting and it’s so inspiring to hear how they connect with my pieces. This is what I am known for.

What matters most to you?
Personally, family matters the most to me. Professionally, seeing people connect with my paintings matters to me.
