Life & Work with Mayaah Tansi of Randallstown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mayaah Tansi.

Hi Mayaah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to introduce yourself.
I moved to the US in November of 2007 with a 2-year-old and a 5-month pregnancy; knowing no one would hire me, I started knocking on neighbors’ doors, saying I could braid. All the little girls in my apartment got their hair braided by me every 2 weeks, and that’s how I got better. It then blossomed into a business.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing is easy. From learning hairstyles online to struggling with the kids, I had to learn on the job. Some hairstyles take hours, and clients are complicated. You always need to figure out what to expect. There have been many challenges, but I don’t regret venturing into them. I now own one of the biggest hair braiding salons in the area by God’s Grace.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a hairdresser. I braid hair; I own a hair salon that specializes in braids. We are known for the neatest braids in Maryland. We take pride in our work. We are professional, fast, clean, and very efficient. We also can accommodate many clients.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
When I would be called up the podium as top of my class, everyone cheered as I collected a prize
