Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria-Victoria Checa.
Hi Maria, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I am a self-taught oil, acrylic, and watercolor painter. I learned to paint by reading books, watching YouTube tutorials, and practicing every day. I started painting in May 2018 for practical reasons. I tried to create large abstract paintings to decorate my home as I was ready to list it for rent. I had never painted before. It was a revelation. I loved the process and couldn’t wait to paint again. I started painting part-time and started selling my artwork in the spring of 2019.
I have become a full-time painter since January 2022.
In my works, I like to express the inner joy and optimism that animates me. I love colors! I think I have an eye for color and balance, which helps me produce joyful aesthetically pleasing artworks that catch the eye and make a room come together. I just started selling prints in limited editions as well. The original paintings and the prints make wonderful gifts.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The main hurdle initially was not being able to paint daily and consistently because of my other part-time job. Ever since I have been a full-time painter, I have had the privilege to paint every day. This has allowed me to make tremendous progress in my techniques and approach to painting.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I think I’m getting known for my waterlilies in the Monet style. It was always a dream of mine to paint lilies in the blue and turquoise hues typical of Monet. I cannot tell you the thrill I feel every time I tackle a new lily painting. I think with practice, I have recognized some of the imperatives of the art structure, composition, value, and color and have managed to use these rules in a coherent way in my waterlily paintings.
I also have developed a good sense of flower fields. Practicing daily and sometimes creating some unusual color combinations has resulted in very lively flower fields.
I also love to paint big abstract paintings in oil or in acrylic. I feel total freedom while creating these big abstract paintings and love to just follow my instinct during the process.
What does success mean to you?
Success to me is, doing what you love which allows the time and space to learn, grow and create while being surrounded by your loved ones.
