Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenda Nasr.
Hi Brenda, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I came to photography rather late in life after working as a legal assistant for over a decade. After deciding to live abroad with my husband shortly after we married, I began dabbling in photography in the lovely city of Zagreb, Croatia. From there, my passion was ignited and I couldn’t put the camera down. After returning to the States in 2018, I decided that photography would be my full-time business.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being self-employed will always have its ups and downs. The road has been as rocky as you would expect given the nature of the work, but there have also been some great moments along the way. Being in a market that seems so oversaturated poses additional challenges as you are constantly trying to stand out from the crowd.
I also have physical obstacles in that I am actually legally blind and have to work around my limitations in a very visual field.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a multi-disciplinary visual artist, photographer, and creative director in Baltimore. I capture everything from portraits to fashion editorials through my specific “lens” and perception, heavily drawing on my experiences as a disabled artist.
I enjoy crafting vivid and striking images through storytelling, either by shooting or directing editorials. I have a passion for writing and have been published for articles centering on disabled and minority artists in outlets such as HuffPost, AfroPunk, and Thought Catalog. My first photography book, “Celebration of Black Women,” was released in 2018.
Any big plans?
I’ve been blessed to have had wonderful opportunities from being published in magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, and Cosmo, to shooting the amazing Tarana Burke. I hope to continue achieving similar milestones while also increasing the visibility of my work.
