Today we’d like to introduce you to Shirley Weffer.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always been searching on the web for cool things to wear and I realize the lack of certain styles and innovative and creative designs without being too crazy or grouchy among other things. Always looking for that middle ground, to be cool and chic at the same time! To get it off the ground I had to go to many trade shows and a lot of struggles.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It wasn’t or still isn’t a smooth road. First of all the financial part of starting a brand right when I found out I was pregnant with my first child, cause a lot of uncertainty. Also, the fact of still having a full-time job requires long nights and weekends to get off the ground. When I launch my first collection at the Stitch show in the Javits center NY makes I realize that the competition was big and I need to step up my game a LOT I have a LOT to learn and also the financial part that involves making a new collection when your first one just fails but with new learning objectives.
Four years later, my brand has grown enough for me to quit my full-time job and focus only on the brand then find out that I was pregnant with my second child, causing more uncertainty but I told to myself that I need to keep going no matter what. More sleepless nights and long weekends. Fast forward 2 years, and I grow enough to move my brand out of my house when the pandemic hit, right before delivery dates.
It was a big financial burden because a lot of my boutiques cancel orders and closed their doors permanently leaving me with a lot of merchandise. Since then, I have been so blessed and everything is been moving in a very positive direction!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have a Petroleum Engineering degree in Venezuela. A few months after my arrival in the USA, I found a job at another clothing brand and learned everything from data entry to patternmaking to production. The style and creativity part I was born with it! I always had and have a good eye for design.
My pieces are timeless, edginess, and ageless and a lot of them are seasonless.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I don’t have a specific favorite book but I love to read about the new age, power of the mind, creativity, and that kind of stuff.
