Today we’d like to introduce you to Malik Pollard.
Hi Malik, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I began working in Television and Film in 2000. After graduating from Morgan State University with a degree in Computer Information Systems, I was exposed to television through a high school friend who had been editing and post-production for BET Networks in Washington, D.C. I suddenly thirsted to work behind the scenes in Television Production but had no formal training. I began doing research that led me to take classes at a local Public Access Station in Arlington, Virginia, where I volunteered on many producer projects. At the station, I began to write and develop my own programming and started to produce my first Public Access show. Flavors “A Taste Of Comedy” (Malik Pollard’s first show) was a Mix of Music, Interviews, and Comedic sketches that featured a unique comedy troop of comedians from the local Washington D.C. (DMV) comedy scene. One of these bands of misfits included Gabrielle Dennis, a young Howard University Theater Major now featured in many shows, including The Upshaw’s on Netflix, The Whitney Houston Story on BET, and Black Lady Sketch Show on HBO. As the show grew in popularity, it started to get more interviews and feature more music, prompting me to create a spin-off show, Flavor’s Unplugged (later changed to Mad Flavor TV Show). Mad Flavor TV has been on the air ever since (2006). The show was originally aired on Public Access stations across the country and has been aired on Verizon FiOS VOD through the Black Broadcasting Network, Comcast Xfinity Cable, and Live Stream. The show is currently running on 4 Independent OTT Streaming Platforms as well. Today, while continuing to produce MadFlavor TV, I am also the Co-Owner of Motion Pixels Media, a multimedia company specializing in film, television, and multi-camera shoots. In addition, I have begun writing, directing, and producing full-length feature films and Reality TV Shows. I am working on a film entitled “Feathers,” written by Tercola Durham and produced by Motion Pixels Media, and “Let’s Paint Him,” a reality show produced by Tamiko Thomas and myself.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
But I have been blessed to be in this business for over 25 years. It has not been a smooth road at all. Funding is always a challenge. Many of my projects are self-funded, and getting sponsors and advertisers is difficult. However, the biggest challenge as of late has been people. Unfortunately, some (not all) people say they are passionate about wanting to be in this field, but their energy and actions show something different. This industry is not all glitz and glamour. There is a lot of work and sacrifice to make it to the top, but that is true for anything worth having.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
When it comes to working, there is Malik Pollard, the Application Support Analyst; And then there is Malik Pollard, the Writer, and Cinematographer. The latter is my passion, and that is Film and Television. I am a jack of all trades in videography and still growing to become a master. I would say my specialty is the creative process, especially when it comes to videography and editing. I will do almost anything to get the right shot. I also like capturing intimate things that most people may not notice. I treat every production like a movie, And I think that if anything sets me apart from others. It’s finding that little something that you don’t pay attention to, but when you see it in the editing, you be like, wow, how did he even see that, and wow, that is cool. I am currently writing my screenplays, Directing, Producing, and still assisting on other projects in any capacity needed.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
The DMV is like no other place on earth. So many affluent Black and Brown people here are about their business. The days of D.C. being Chocolate City is what made it great. The Movers and shakers, the entrepreneurial spirit. DMV is the hub for Black Culture. At least it was. A lot has changed, and the landscape is far different than the city I was born and raised in. So what I loved about the city the most is what I now like the least about it. The Culture of D.C. is slowly dying. The Music, food, and Chocolate City’s energy is dwindling. Most saddening is the support in our community for local businesses is dying with it.
