Conversations with Ndifreke Enyeama

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ndifreke Enyeama.

Ndifreke, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I came to the United States when I was 19 years old. The first job I worked as a Janitor at my college. There was a nursing home close to the college that would train people as nursing assistants and in exchange, you would have to work for them for a year.

I went through the training, passed the exams, and started working as a nursing assistant caring for people in the nursing home. Soon after that, I could not afford my school fees so I moved to another state and transferred my nursing assistant license to the new state.

I later then learnt that I could become a Licensed Practical Nurse. So, while I dedicated my weekends to work, weekdays were for school. After practicing for about 3 years, I decided to return to school to become a Registered Nurse with the support of my husband. At, this point I had 2 little children and sometimes I had to take them with me and drop them off at a nearby daycare.

But by God’s grace, I graduated as a registered nurse. Eventually, I returned back to school while pregnant with my 3rd child for my master’s in family nursing. I became a nurse practitioner in 2019. Due to my background in Nigeria of lack and not-so-good medical care, I wanted to use my knowledge to help others in any way I can.

This led me to start my Youtube channel called Ndispeaks Tv where I educate people including parents on common adult and childhood illnesses. My goal is to empower people, especially the black community and to equip them with the knowledge needed to live a healthy life.

I also conduct free health fairs in collaboration with other health care workers at my church with the support of my pastor. I also provide food to some families that are not able to provide healthy meals to their children on a monthly basis. We are also planning a free medical tour by the grace of God next year in Nigeria. Our focus is especially on children.

We want to ensure that children get the best quality care that they deserve. We just started but we hope for so much more. We are hoping to support millions of children both here in the United States and in other countries as God leads.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been smooth. Not being able to afford my school fees, I quit a four-year college and enrolled in a community college. I worked as a nursing assistant and my paycheck was divided between food, rent, and school fees. At one point I had children but that did not stop me and I am so glad that I persisted.

Youtube is not an easy platform, but just as I did not give up on my education, I have decided that I won’t give up on Youtube either and I hope to continue the platform to educate as many people as I can reach and hopefully be able to provide the support I need to provide for children.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Family Nurse Practitioner. I currently work at a federally qualified healthcare center providing care to low-income families and people with no insurance. I see children from the age of 0 to adulthood. I treat people that are struggling with drug abuse, people living with HIV, and also treat Hepatitis c.

I provide preventative medicine for both children and adults and I also provide well-woman examinations to women. My job has opened me up to really discover that so many people are struggling and I hope to be part of the solution.

I am proud that I put myself through school to where I am today. I can proudly say that my patients love me and I enjoy working with them. What sets me apart is that I am always willing to learn, treat others with respect and work well with others. I am always ready to teach and share with others.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Absolutely! People are important. People need people. Covid-19 highlighted healthcare workers and the importance of our job. It showed us that we need each other to survive and to keep the world going.
