Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin & Miss.
Hi Kevin & Miss, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hello! We are Kevin (he/him) and Miss (she/her). We were born and raised in Baltimore and met our freshman year of high school almost 20 years ago.
We’ve remained glued to each other’s side (at least in spirit) ever since. We’ve seen each other through everything, and if there’s one thing we’ve learned it’s that life is pretty absurd and sometimes the only thing you can do is laugh.
We’ve always played around with the idea of doing something creative together at some point, for something, but we were never serious. When the pandemic hit, like a lot of people, we started listening to a lot of podcasts. For a year and a half we barely saw each other, but every few weeks we would say, “We should really start a podcast, it could be fun.”
At one point our main form of communication was just texting each other episodes of podcasts we liked. Then in October of 2021, we decided to actually start a show and Creepy InQueeries is the result!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s only been a few months so far, so we’ve had pretty smooth sailing with the podcast… unless you count Miss’s complete inability to use technology (said with love), and the occasional recording glitches issues.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a true crime/comedy podcast. We grew up watching Forensic Files, 20/20, and Unsolved Mysteries which molded us into macabre super nerds. We really dig horror movies, true crime paperbacks, a good haunting, and a creepy cryptid. The weirder the better. We seek out these stories because they’re fascinating.
At their core, these cases are about human behavior and how we react to processes of the world around us, and human behavior can be baffling and sometimes violent. So diving into these stories can be creepy and scary, but they’re easier to digest together. The comedy part of the show mostly comes from digesting and reacting to these stories.
We don’t always mean to laugh, and we are never laughing at or about the victims, sometimes criminals make some really hilariously terrible decisions. Plus we’ve been making each other laugh for 20 years, we aren’t sure we could actually be completely serious together anyway.
Because we’re both queer, we like to center LGBTQIA2+ issues if not in our stories, then on social media and in our chats before we officially start the show each week. We have a series on social media called “Fairy Godparents” where every few weeks we choose an LGBTQIA2+ person in history and make a short post about their contributions to LGBTQIA2+ rights and culture.
Firstly, as a reminder that we’ve always been here, and second to remember who we have to thank queer people today to live our lives openly and proudly.
What does success mean to you?
Sometimes it can be hard not to measure success with numbers — not to quantify it by the number of listeners or Instagram likes. In some way, that will always be a part of it, but really, we make this show for ourselves, because we missed having a creative outlet and because we missed each other.
We both work full-time and have full lives to attend to, so we didn’t want the same kind of pressures involved with making Creepy InQueeries. We absolutely love that other people are listening, and seem to really dig the show, but that’s just a fun bonus.
As long as we love what we’re doing, we are having fun, and we have one or two people out there listening, we are a success.
