Conversations with Gil Cavey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gil Cavey.

Hi Gil, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a second-generation HVAC Tech. My father started me on the path to this trade I’ve grown to love. I have been in the trade now for 20 plus years and worked my way up to be the COO of an amazing company Beltway Air Conditioning & Heating. The fact of the knowledge, experience, and love for this trade I started the HVAC Uncensored Podcast. We are a weekly Podcast giving back to all those HVAC techs & owners out there. Talking about services that help your business. Maybe talking about trade school or HVAC education. We talk about tools if people should spend their hard-earned money. We talk about every aspect to make all of us better at what we do for ourselves, our families, and the customer. We always say Let’s get better together. We helped break down the boundary for more women to enter our trade. I love to be an advocate for the blue-collar trades in general. Let the younger generation know that college isn’t the only option for them. The trades and especially the HVAC trade are providing a really good life to a lot of people. My ultimate goal is to give back to a trade that has given so much to me and is a voice for some who don’t have one.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been far from smooth. I went through a drug addiction years ago and I’m lucky and grateful to still be here. I don’t hide it I’m open and honest about it. I try to help others will the same issues as much as I can. The POdcast started out as fun I never thought it turn into what it is today. I was told your eating your time no one will listen and you can’t use foul language it will never grow. Well, let’s just say I’ve grown despite all that into one of the largest HVAC Podcasts out today. If I have to change who I am to do a Podcast then I shouldn’t be doing it. I love what I do and being able to give back to my HVAC Brothers & Sisters.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
The HVAC trade has always been known as I back-breaking job, with long hours, dealing with hot attics. In the cold and rain. You never see your family and always miss family events. Well, it doesn’t have to be that way nor does it need to continue. No saying what will do will ever be easy by any means the quality of life can be there. At Beltway Air Conditioning & Heating as well other companies across the country we have changed the standard. The company culture of people wanting to come to work, being appreciated, paid well, and having that home life-work balance. On the Podcast, I make sure other HVAC Owners follow along and other HVAC Techs know these companies exist. I help the owners will how to make the changes and help techs learn what’s needed so they can better and live the life they deserve. I wanna make the younger generation know they can live a good life in this industry. Also that the trades have made more millionaires than a lot of these careers kids go to college for.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is different for everyone. Kinda like the saying beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To me, success is first and foremost being happy. Being able to spend time with my wife and four children. To make enough money to be able to enjoy life and create memories. The legacy I live to my children and wells the legacy and amount of people’s lives I can help in a positive way.
