Conversations with Chink Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chink Jones.

Chink, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I first started writing poems as a way to get my thoughts out of my head as a kid.

I’ve been battling depression for as long as I can remember and it helped a lot but one day while I and my brother Tion were spending a weekend at our grandmother’s house I saw an Usher Twix commercial and I felt like I could do that lol I was about 9 or 10 at the time. I always loved music.

I wouldn’t end up recording my first song until my ninth-grade year. Once I got that reaction from my homies and random people from school it put the battery in my back. I was a student of the game before because I loved it but once I decided to really be in it I had to go back and research all the greats. I never was particularly good at anything but the music so I couldn’t let it go.

From that point, I worked with various crews until me and my homies Ike and Freeze started our own label called SHINE Music Group. We traveled doing shows in various cities and I like to think of that time as my boot camp to get to this point because we had to learn everything on the fly.

After that disbanded, I was on my own for a little while before finally starting CRWN Inc with the help of my homies Kage, J Mack, and Toafik which is the label we all currently release music through.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. When I tell you I had to learn the business on the fly I mean it. I was 16 years old trying to understand contracts, splits, and all the other aspects of the game.

Another obstacle I encountered was just trying to curate a fan base when there are hundreds of thousands of new songs being uploaded daily and because it’s so many artists it’s hard for people that have known me or know I do music to support my music as regular consumers because they still see me as that kid they grew up with.

The only other obstacle is staying alive, I lost one of my closest friends to gun violence our senior year of high school & I have been losing friends to the violence that plagues the city ever since.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a rapper, songwriter, and executive producer.

Writing is my specialty, I can write from any perspective and for anyone. I am most proud of the year I had in 2021, I did a live in-studio album and recorded the visuals for it live along with working on my next album.

My perspective and my willingness to go too far on a record is probably what I’m known for and what sets me apart from everybody else that’s fighting for one of those spots as a big dog in the city.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
