Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Miller. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Liz Miller is a second-generation fine artist. Dance/Performance art is part of her repertoire; she performs locally and internationally (in various Canadian cities from 2002 to 2005, Monrovia, Liberia in 2001, and in Vizianagaram, India in 2015).
Her fine art has been shown nationwide but also internationally in Japan, Indonesia, and England. She has a B.A. in Art and Design from Towson University and an MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art.
She has been a teaching artist for the last eighteen years and currently is an art teacher for Baltimore County Public schools. She creates hair sculptures, performance art, and film. Her films capture black bodies cleansing and blessing previously traumatic spaces for black and brown bodies.
She has been a guest speaker at Johns Hopkins University and Maryland Institute College of Art. Five years ago, she created Mural Art Tours Baltimore, a company that offers multiple tours throughout the neighborhoods of Baltimore.
These tours aid tour goers in exploring the fabric that holds these communities together focused on the murals and street art, but further exploring the context of the city.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
For myself, it took me a little while to find out that I was an artist through and through; that this life was for me.
There are many barriers to imposter syndrome and low self-esteem that plagued me in my journey to becoming a regular practicing artist. Parallel creating in my 9-5 job, as well as my personal creative practice, allowed me to grow my confidence through many trials.
I overcame the fear of failing to become an artist who sells her work, shows in museums, does solo shows, has shown nationally and internationally, and most recently, was in an article in the New Yorker.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I see the art world shifting towards showcasing more art of people of the global majority.
I believe we will see more stories of a variety of cultures and these will expand our collective consciousness to acknowledge lost and forgotten stories.
I’m excited to be a part of the more inclusive storytelling of our contemporary age.
