Today we’d like to introduce you to Tangent Askew.
Hi Tangent, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I established Heavenly Designs & Spaces on January 3, 2012. I honestly was met with a major life change and challenge that pushed me to go into business for myself.
In 2011, I had gotten divorced and was laid off within 3 months’ time of the same year.
I was battling a health issue (hypertension) from all the stress and anxiety acquired from my current challenges that bombarded me all at once; and I also had a 3-year-old, that I was single-handedly caring for as a single parent now due to the circumstance and my now reality.
Thankfully, I had a great support system from both sides of the family who helped me along the way, with navigating being a newly single parent with responsibilities, and a plan that I had to come up with, to figure it all out. While trying to figure things out, I prayed and asked God – what am I supposed to do now? How am I going to care for this precious child and go on with my new life? And the life that I am used to living? I pondered, and the answer came very quickly – (Interior Decorating)!
Truthfully, Interior Décor and Decorating has always pulled on my heartstrings from a child, as well as into my adulthood. However, this idea, to go into business, was only supposed to support me until I found another job to secure and stabilize my circumstances. But God had another plan in place for me!
I would often, as a hobby and love of decorating, help friends and family with sprucing up and decorating their homes. I myself have personally always kept a beautifully decorated home because that is how I was raised and what I witnessed and experienced growing up. Coming from a family where elegance and beautiful homes were the norms; I was destined to carry on the bloodline of Interior decor and fashion.
The women in my family embodied the impeccable style and the ability to create a beautiful dream home across Maryland, DC, and North Carolina with high-end touches and finishes, that the everyday homeowner could only dream of in our community. The design and look of their homes were EVERYTHING to me!
Due to these personal experiences lived and handed down; my keen knowledge of opulence and quality designs helped spearhead my passion for Interior Decor and Styling.
Between my grandmother and my aunts, I acquired a style of great taste and decorating skill, by seeing them strategically and creatively grace their homes with extravagant chandeliers, victorian custom upholstered furniture, monogrammed linen table cloths/napkins; gold-plated china and drinking flutes, heavy silverware that you had to hand polish and prepare for family dinners; and state of the art renovations frequently to their homes (in a time when it was not popular as it is today); HGTV or any other home show or platform was not around to use as a guide as it is today.
The joys of experiencing ALL THINGS BEAUTIFUL and TIMELESS were right before my eyes, and thus Heavenly Designs & Spaces was created. I also served as an Interior Design assistant for an Interior Design Firm, in Washington, DC – where I was able to train under the VP of Interior Design.
Since launching Heavenly Designs & Spaces (HDNS), I have had the pleasure of decorating and styling homes within the DC, Maryland, and Virginia surrounding areas for 11 years now, and what a joy it has been! As the Principal Owner, Interior Stylist of HDNS.
I have decorated and staged homes/residences in Baltimore, Potomac MD, Columbia, Gaithersburg, Odenton, Bel Air, Crofton, Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, and many more areas within the Region. I have also decorated a Mortgage Company in Hunt Valley, Several Agent’s Offices for Keller Williams Realty in Washington DC, a Hair Salon, and an Air B&B.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
To be honest, I absolutely love the aspect, the purpose, and the feeling of Interior Decorating. I love to be around, see, feel and create all things beautiful through decorating and styling. It makes me happy! I mean, to be able to use my creative mind and innate ability to create a beautiful and heavenly home or space is the best thing for me. It is my happy place! it is my purpose.
However, there are some challenges as with any company large or small that you will encounter. That’s the nature of the beast! Through experiences and trials & errors – you have your hurdles, peaks & valleys; and many learning experiences as time goes on; in an ever-so-changing and trending environment with Interior Design.
The peaks are the successful outcomes of the projects after all is said and done! From the beautiful relationships that are formed; the conversations, hugs, smiles, tears of joy and shared stories are all a part of the course. Also, having the creative ability to bring a vision to life or just play a part in developing a safe and beautiful space for a client that is on the path to a fresh start.
The valley’s may be anything from the unrealistic expectations from a client. The normality of more “wants” than budget. The delivery and time differences with multiple vendors. My propensity to be extremely flexible (to a fault) with clients, can sometimes throw off schedule as well. Every project varies and differs. Ultimately – once we are at the finish line and the home, office, or space is completed; everyone is happy and thankfully pleased!
