Life & Work with Marcia Alphonso

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcia Alphonso.

Hi Marcia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Hi there, I am Marcia, I was born in Guyana and migrated to the US in 1983. I lived in Brooklyn, NY, and graduated from Brooklyn College with a degree in Management and Finance. I am married to my loving husband and have three amazing children, two bonus daughters, and two grandchildren. In 2005, my family and I relocated to Maryland.

I love interior design, being creative and I find any opportunity to entertain. As far back as I can remember I have been planning and designing events for my family and friends. I have also always been the go-to person for organizing and decorating events at every job I’ve had. After many years of helping friends and family, (including planning and designing my wedding), I discovered that design was not only my passion it was my purpose. After overcoming my limiting beliefs, I launched Imagine It Event Decor and Design at the end of 2019.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
As such, with life’s uncertainties, there have been some struggles. In June of 2020, in the heart of the pandemic, a few months after I launched my business, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a devastating time. I was not only starting a business, but I was also working full time. I had to travel back and forth to New York to undergo my treatment. It would have been easy to just quit, but I never once thought of giving up.

Through it all, surgeries, radiation, injections tears, and everything else that came with it, I have never been more grateful for the lessons that cancer has taught me.

Having cancer changed my perspective of life and made me a better person. It gave me gratitude for my health, life, and everything around me. It taught me to never give up and to do what I love because life is precious. It reminded me to live with intention, meaning, and purpose and not focus on unimportant things.

What I’ve learned is that horrible things are going to happen in life. When it does, we have to look for the blessings and lessons that come with it. It won’t be easy but if you believe that there is good in every bad situation you will find them.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am the Owner and Lead Planner and Designer at Imagine It Event Décor and Design, a Maryland and Washington DC Planning and Event Design company. We obsess over the decor so our clients don’t have to!

At Imagine It Event Décor and Design, we serve our clients by bringing the vision that they’ve imagined to life. We believe that the beauty is in the details and in creating thoughtfully executed one-of-a-kind intimate weddings and events, that will be remembered for years to come.

My goal for each event is to completely understand my client’s needs by giving them the close and thoughtful attention they deserve. To accomplish this, I make it a priority to learn about their personality, uniqueness, and experiences. I believe that every event, no matter how big or small, deserves attention to detail and should be a reflection of my client’s vision.

I strive to build relationships with my clients to ensure that their day is filled with personal details and their sense of style. While also considering the guests’ experience from the moment they arrived to when they leave.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Just being alive makes me happy. But nothing else brings me more joy than spending time with my husband, children, and my family.
