Hi India, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I woke up one day and said, “I want to be a FULL-TIME Real Estate Professional”. At the time, I was a multi-degreed Accountant who excelled tremendously in that industry for over 20 years. I’d progressed in the accounting profession over 2 decades and felt like I’d given it everything I had but was not as fulfilled as I wanted to be. I started off my accounting career as a Staff Accountant and worked my way up to Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The later part of my accounting career I’d worked in law firms for about 12 years. Although I absolutely love accounting, the space I was in left more to be desired.
I committed to my heart and left my long-time career as an Accountant to be a Realtor, The Ultimate Realtor. I had been licensed in real estate for nearly 17 years at the time but the more I progressed in my accounting career, the less real estate I was doing. There was just something about real estate that I couldn’t let go, so I left Corporate America as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of a real estate law firm to pursue real estate sales full time. I wanted to have more impact in the world. I wanted to help people. I wanted to show people a path that could possibly change their lives and the lives of their legacies just as real estate had changed my life years prior.
At the age of 24, I purchased my first real estate property. I had no idea what I was doing. Found an agent who helped me find the home. She was a really nice person, but she didn’t educate me. She didn’t share important information with me. I actually got a good deal on my purchase. At the time I didn’t know how good my deal was. I’d purchased a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom condominium in Alexandria, Virginia as an assumption. An assumption is when you take over a person’s existing loan. This was amazing because instead of a 30-year mortgage, I had 27 years left – the previous owner had the loan for 3 years before I it took over. That saved me 3 years of money! It was unbelievable.
The condo I purchased had a breakfast bar, soaking tub, fireplace, walk-in closet, and more. It was small, cute, and intimate BUT most importantly for me, it was only about $50/mo more than my rent I was currently splitting with a roommate. In my mind, $50 extra a month to have my own space and be a homeowner was better than amazing! So, I bought the condo. One year later, I sold the condo because I had gotten engaged, and I was planning to get married and move into a house. That sale for me was the most money I’d seen at once that belonged to me. I couldn’t’ believe I’d made money by just living somewhere! Wow! So, my interest in real estate was peeked and there begin my journey.
Fast forward 20 years, I am The Ultimate Realtor. I am an award-winning, multi-million-dollar producer. I am a luxury agent. I am the 2022 Preferred Realtor for the Women of the NFL for Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia. This means I have the opportunity to serve The Washington Commanders and The Baltimore Ravens should they need real estate assistance covering the DMV. I am 2022 Agent of the Year in Prince George’s County by Rate Your Agent. I received a ONE DIAMOND Award for my 2021 gross closing commissions by my brokerage, HomeSmart. I rank amongst the top 5% of Agents in my brokerage. I received 2020 Excellence in Client Service Award by HomeSnap. I was also awarded 2021 Top 25% Agent Award and 2021 Fastest-Growing Agent Award and 2021 Top 20% Client Favorite Award among Pro+ Agents Nationwide by HomeSnap. All of this happened in less than 2 years!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No road is ever smooth. The first hump I had to get over was allowing my brain not to be caught up in what is TRADITIONAL and to create my own space, lane, road, map, area…whatever you call it. I have a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in accounting. I felt like I was giving up all the years of education I’d invested by taking a different path. That was the first mental obstacle I had to get over – DON’T BE TRAPPED BY YOUR DEGREE!
When I finally executed my plan (or lack of a plan), I had to get used to not relying on a paycheck every 2 weeks or semi-monthly. That’s HARD when you have worked 20+ years and that’s all you know. You live your life around getting paid. So, it’s important to be financially positioned and to have some RESERVES when you are making a transition into full-time entrepreneurship. There will be times when you don’t get paid from your work as you are finding you way – BE FINANCIALLY PREPARED.
Creating a brand that people will remember is also hard. These days, for a small business, it’s important to create a brand that says exactly what you do. You want your brand to automatically tell people what they might need your services for without having to do a whole lot of selling – BRAND WITH A PURPOSE.
Finding the right audience and the right people to do business can be a challenge. You have to know what you want and create an AVATAR of who you want to reach. For example, to be a part of my real estate team, it is a requirement that all team members be self-starters, ethical, coachable, hungry, resourceful, and willing to take immediate action to accomplish goals. If this isn’t your profile, you can’t work with me – SET YOUR RULES.
Overall, struggles will occur, but the key is to get out of your own way and follow the path you want to be on. If you’re working on your business each day, this will improve, and your business will get better and better.
