Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmir Antoine.
Hi Jasmir, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My earliest memories of makeup started with my grandmother and my Nana. They both grew up in the south and had unique powerful makeup and aesthetics. My grandmother wore an Iconic dark purple lip and heavy eyeliner that made her look fierce and powerful.
My Nana was the total opposite. She embodied red lips and one mole. When they weren’t looking I would sneak in their makeup to mimic them because it was improper for young girls to wear makeup. Fast-forward to high school, I had a Spanish teacher who wore beautiful bright color makeup. I admired her because I have never seen black women wear bold colored eyeshadows.
With her, I learned products and techniques good for darker skin women. A week before the first pandemic lockdown she gifted me a palette filled with bold colors. I used that palette to practice and combine crazy colors. Instantly, I was cyberbullied and laughed at. I didn’t let that discourage me. Instead, I watched tutorials and failed, and failed, and failed. I realized that the problem was there was a lack of black influencers doing bold makeup. I saw hundreds of basic colors and looks, but nothing stood out to me.
Then I got a job at a smoothie store next to Ulta beauty. There, I was surrounded by a minority of females who love makeup. Minority being gingers, Hispanics, and Palestinians. Every shift, we would come with wild and crazy makeup looks to work. We were working 12-hour shifts with full faces of makeup. This is where I learned to be bold and was inspired to continue.
Instead of judging me, they helped me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Makeup has not been a smooth road. I love doing makeup on myself and most of my clients are older women. My struggles come to younger women. Booking with me is an experience. You will be completely pampered, fed, and leave goodies.
Most people in my age group disagree with my prices or my requirements for booking. These requirements include paying a deposit to secure your appointment and showing up on time. I had to learn my target audience and the quality of my makeup.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am the owner of Jadorablex Creations. At Jadorablex Creations. I perform nail, makeup, hair, and waxing services. In addition, I sell organic Hair Protein oil. I am known for and most proud of my makeup. I specialize in color-correcting makeup for uneven skin and growing out damaged hair.
What sets me apart from others is the joy of doing my job. I generally love what I do. Most people need a break from their job, however, my job is a break from being a full-time Chemistry student. I hear stories from darker women about their skin being too dark for bright makeup. I love proving to them that it’s possible and there is no such thing as “too dark”.
When you book with me you instantly become a part of my family. From the moment you walk in the door you are showered with love, food, champagne, and goodie bags. Jadorablex Creations is different from others because you are booking an experience, not just a quick service.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck has not played any role in my business or my personal life. I was taught hard work and practice make better… not perfect but better. I am good at what I do because I have been practicing for over 5 years. I am always learning new techniques and new ways to perfect my craft.
