Hi Jasmine, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
It all began as a child. Born from a family who took pride in how they dressed, I quickly gained a love of fashion! As a little girl, I would always get dressed for Sunday service and my late father would always snap a picture of my Sunday’s best on his Polaroid.
When it ran out of film he’d always throw the film in the fishbowl. They would never be developed lol. But that was our thing, that was one way we connected! I went on throughout school always keeping up with the latest fashion trends.
Each night, I’d prepare my look for the next day! When I got to senior year in high school, I was granted the superlative of “Best Dressed!” I went on to go to college and started a career in defense contracting but the love of fashion stuck with me.
I always had a dream of owning a boutique. In 2017, I took a leap of faith and started an online boutique, Slay Couture. What started out as a hobby has blossomed into an online fashion hub serving women in more than 23 states and 3 countries! I use my passion for fashion to make other women feel beautiful from the inside out.
Slay Couture encourages women to step out of the box with their fashion preferences and our pieces are selected to not only keep up with trends but to boost self-confidence.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The path to success is never a straight one! As I started my boutique, I had no idea if others would support me. But that didn’t stop me! I continued to push my brand and market my products.
In my first year of business, I didn’t make as much as I hoped but it was something I was passionate about so I didn’t stop I kept going! I constantly tweaked my business model and I changed my marketing approach. In retail, one of the things I learned was you can’t just sell styles I personally liked you have to identify products that would sell and be of interest to your targeted audience.
I changed my approach to just this and in doing this year after year my business continues to grow.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Those who know my brand but do not know me personally should know I am a woman of many talents.
I am a business growth professional by day that leads a team that manages a multi-billion dollar portfolio for one of the world’s largest defense and aerospace organizations. The skills I’ve learned in my day job I use to optimize profit in my own business.
I also enjoy giving back. I lost my father to cancer in 2011 and with the help of my family, I started a local cancer fund that gives assistance to families and patients battling cancer. The fund is managed by The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region and it is called the Gideon Miller Cancer Fund.
