Conversations with Lisa Shifren

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Shifren.

Hi Lisa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I picked up a camera at the age of 12 at overnight camp and have been photographing ever since! I studied photography in college and am always attending conferences and taking workshops to learn more to perfect my craft.

I love being part of the photography community, we support each other and learn a lot from each other. I started my photography business in 2006 and it has been an amazing journey seeing how my skills have grown over the years. It’s all about the light! As well as good posing and composition of course.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The past two years with COVID-19 have been challenging as a business owner, especially having an in-person business. None of us expected this, and I am taking it as it comes, grateful to be able to work as people feel comfortable and make adjustments as needed in this ever-changing climate.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in photographing portraits, headshots/personal branding, families, boudoir, and spaces. I love helping my subjects feel comfortable in front of the camera and making their portrait sessions an empowering experience. My clients always leave my studio walking taller and feeling more confident about themselves after being photographed. This is my favorite part about being a photographer, I love that I get to help people see themselves in their best light!

Some of my favorite projects over the years have been volunteering to photograph people in Baltimore who are starting over. Everyone needs a good photo for their online presence and it makes me happy to be able to give this to folks who may never have been photographed professionally. I know that it helps to give them some confidence moving forward.

I have also had the privilege of photographing the Baltimore Holocaust survivor community over the years. This has been an incredible experience and I am working on a book containing their portraits, stories, and photos of them when they were young. Please ask me about it when you see me around town, it’s been an ongoing project that I hope to put into print soon!

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Don’t be shy about getting in front of the camera! Everyone has a story to tell, and a good photographer can help you do it.
