Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Ward.
Hi Robert, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Well, I started out as a dancer. I breakdance and do popping in small group. When the recession hit in 2007, I didn’t have a job so I was getting music done for a dance performance at a DJ house in Philly. So, he asked me to be his driver. So, I made some money doing events with him and learning the business side of djing. After a few years, I asked him to teach me the music of djing. Took 3 classes with him and decided I could do this professionally. Started out buying some equipment and came up with a plan to leave my furniture moving job. In 2017, I left my full-time job to start my DJ company. That’s where my journey started.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely some challenges. 1st starting a business with no real business experience. Trial and error was all a part of things. Didn’t know how and what was required to get a business loan. I needed equipment and made some decisions that wasn’t the smartest. That is the learning process. Next was how to get some leads. No one knows me at that time. So, trying to get opportunities was hard.
Transportation was the next issue. I was using my personal vehicle for regular life and business so it was racking up a ton of miles.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Prime 1 productions?
My business is a DJ entertainment company. We offer multiple services as we are a growing company. Djing, MC, Photobooth, photography, video, lighting.
We do about 100 -120 weddings a year. Looking to grow that number each year.
Most cases when I’m doing an event I will incorporate my dance experience into the event to create some awesome moments.
You will see me out there doing my thing with the guests. If I have to do 10 splits and slide across the dance floor on my head, that’s what I will do to bring the party to life.
I employ some really amazing people I’ve met at other events. So, they have partnered with me to combine our skills.
I’m a big transformers fan so I wanted to incorporate that into my professional side. That’s how the company name came into existence. Adding fun and business.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Patience is important. When dealing different people in events where things can go wrong. Being able to maintain control and make smart decisions will take you far. As many events I’ve been a part of, being flexible and quick thinking is much-needed.
Listening to clients super important. This business is customer service. At the end of the day, your customers will let you know if you were successful or not.
