Today we’d like to introduce you to Eryn Donaldson.
Hi Eryn, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I’ve always known what I didn’t want to do but never had that “I want to be this when I grow up” moment. I knew I didn’t want a 9-5, typical office job and that having a boss wasn’t really for me but I wasn’t sure where I would end up.
I have always been a pretty creative person, and always preferred to work “off-hours” which wouldn’t fit into an office job anyway. Being someone who was always an athletic, the thought of sitting at a desk for 8+ hours a day wasn’t for me either.
Fortunately for me, my dad was an entrepreneur and always encouraged me to do whatever makes me happy. We always brainstormed ideas and what I would want to do.
In high school and college, I was an athlete and that was really my focus. Once I graduated, I had no idea what I would do. After a couple years of being a fitness model and trying out small jobs here and there, I really just fell into organizing. I was always good at organizing and making spaces look nice but I had no idea that this could be a real career path!
My dad volunteered me to help a family friend organize her kitchen and from there my business took off and The Model Home was born. I went to her house a few days after work (my one short attempt at a desk job) and would tell her all about how I knew my then job wasn’t a good fit; how I felt it was holding me back and I knew I needed something more… She suggested that I just quit and organize for people full-time…So that’s what I did! I quit and started showcasing my before and afters on Instagram and social media.
Once I told people what I was doing and my business immediately took off! I was having so much fun decluttering and organizing for people all over the country and making a career out of it. A month or so in and my projects got larger and I realized I needed a team. I decided to go with it and expand!
It has now been about 4 years and has been a wonderful journey so far.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think I just view everything about owning my own business as exciting and fun. I really haven’t viewed anything as an obstacle. I try to look at everything with gratitude. The opportunity to have my own business, be my own boss and create a company that I think is making a direct impact on our clients’ lives is incredible. So anytime something difficult or challenging pops up I reflect quickly and figure out a solution.
I can say that I have been very fortunate to have a dad that was also an entrepreneur, so I think I was born with that mindset and was trained from a young age to handle the life of a business owner. I believe that hard work and a positive attitude has really helped and is so important for anyone interested in starting their own business.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Model Home?
The Model Home is a professional organizing business that services residential and commercial spaces. We offer decluttering, organizing, unpacking, and packing services. Each client is different, so we create a customized approach and system for each space. We do a little bit of everything, from working with people that have hoarding tendencies, to people who are just looking to downsize (or upgrade!), to new home buyers looking to set up their home! We do it all! We have worked with various celebrities and have now partnered with Bed Bath and Beyond to be part of their Home Happier team to launch their Square Away Home Organization Line.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I am so grateful to be able to own this business and work with such amazing people. The look on clients’ faces is the absolute best!
