Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Hurt.
Hi Amber, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
Growing up, I wanted to be a social worker or guidance counselor. However, in my last two years of undergrad at SUNY College at Old Westbury, I became a student leader. I was a Resident Assistant, Orientation Leader, Student Government Association Senator and so much more. My school spirit and involvement even led me to be voted Homecoming Queen my senior year of college.
Because I have been involved on campus my Resident Director at the time asked would I be interested in pursuing a career in Student Affairs, so I applied to the NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program. This mentorship program provided me with a mentor at my institution to prepare me for the field. I decided to move forward with Student Affairs and went to graduate school at Hofstra University where I received my master’s degree. Fast forward 8 years later, I still work in Student Affairs/Higher Education and have gained experiences working at numerous universities with thousands of students.
All of this to say, The Adulting Queen was born because I work with college students and realized there were so many things that they didn’t know about adulting. They would come to me to ask various things about job searching, traveling, saving money, etc. My friends would also ask me about all the popular brunch spots and travel hacks because I stayed on the go pre-pandemic.
In the pandemic, I’ve been able to expand The Adulting Queen to speaking services, coaching, events, merchandise, and more. The mission is to help adults navigate adulting because no one teaches you how to be an adult and it’s hard. There is more to life than just going to work and coming home. We need to live, not just exist. The Adulting Queen displays that by living out loud while shedding light on the difficult parts of being a human. We’ll figure this adulting thing out together!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Creating The Adulting Queen really was just for fun but at the start of the pandemic, I realized what it could be. It has been difficult balancing everything by myself with a full-time job and life happening.
It’s also difficult when I genuinely don’t feel like doing anything for The Adulting Queen because I’m tired then I beat myself up about it. This has gotten a little easier as I remind myself I’m doing the best I can. In the future, I’d love to have consistent income from it and expand to have a team.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The Adulting Queen’s mission is to provide inspiration for others to define what adulting means for them and how to live life for themselves in an authentic and positive nature. Adults of all generations are inspired to be productive and healthy adults. There are so many things that you don’t know about until you get there. I want to share my experiences with others to help them be a few steps ahead but also acknowledge that there will be bumps in the road and that’s okay. Everything is not picture perfect and that is okay.
The Adulting Queen offers merchandise, newsletters, speaking engagements, professional development, workshop facilitation, coaching, and events. Two events to highlight are Sippin’ Sunday and All Black Everything. Sippin’ Sunday brings individuals together virtually in an informal setting to talk about things like mental health, budgeting, finding your purpose, racial injustice, and goal setting.
All Black Everything has been virtual for the past 2 years with hopes of being in person one day. All Black Everything celebrates Black excellence and brings awareness to the uniqueness of Black people and their stories. Follow on social media and subscribe to the newsletter to stay up to date with what’s happening! You can also find The Adulting Queen on Patreon: www.patreon.com/TheAdultingQueen.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is spending my summers in Farmville, Virginia. Being from New York, going down there for the summer was a big change of scenery. It was so fun though because I got to spend time with my family and make memories that I still hold dear to my heart. When my parents would pick me up to bring me back home I’d always cry.
I was set on moving to Virginia for college and thought I was going to go to Virginia State University. It was the first school I received acceptance to but after realizing how much it would cost I decided against it. Virginia still is considered my second home and I always enjoy a trip down there to see my family.
