Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Barfield.
Hi Kimberly, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My professional journey began in media marketing in television and radio. But it was a suggestion from my girlfriends to start a blog that set me on my current trajectory.
In 2009, I started a personal life + style blog that is currently known as Pish Posh Perfect. Through promoting the blog, I started to dip my toe into the social media landscape, and that’s where the passion for content creation and digital marketing began.
I was still in my full-time position in media at the time, so I asked my manager to allow me to start and run a Twitter account for our market. That turned into a regional Twitter account for the 8 media markets we serviced in our division and my success with growing that account gave me the courage to seek out freelance opportunities as well.
I began freelancing as a social media marketer, managing accounts for the retail clients of a small public relations agency, writing ghost blog posts for those clients, and writing their website and sales copy for their products. It was so much fun! And at the same time, my own blog and the relationships I was making through my own brand were growing as well. I earned opportunities to write for online outlets like Examiner.com, Madame Noire, and a website Carol’s Daughter briefly ran called Transitioning Movement; I was able to work in influencer relations for a few national brands, helping them to partner up with other bloggers; I even had a stint as Editorial Director for the website of a subscription beauty box company. And finally, a few high-profile style site features helped me move into the Personal Stylist arena for several years as well.
Now, I have a young child, and with all the changes we experienced in 2020, I’m most focused on copywriting and digital content creation, which allow me the flexibility to work from home, and be available for my family.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There have been challenges along the way. Several years ago, I struck out from my full-time corporate job to freelance full time. With freelance income having ebb and flow, it’s important to really be prepared and plan ahead for expenses. I had work, clients, and opportunities but my strategy for making it all come together didn’t pan out, and I ended up going back to work full time for a few more years.
However, I learned some valuable lessons, like how important it is to also have passive income in addition to my service offerings so that I don’t get burnt out by constantly trading hours for dollars. I’m back to freelancing and working with clients and brands full time, and the second time has been the charm!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am the creative behind Kim Barfield Style. Through copywriting and content creation services, I help style/fashion, beauty, and parenting brands find that sweet spot between selling to, and connecting with their audiences online, using a relatable storytelling approach.
I also publish everyday personal style, home organization, and parenting content on my website, Pish Posh Perfect, and on my social media.
My passion + purpose is helping both real women and small, woman-owned businesses show up and make an impact, both in-person and online.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, my nose was always in a book. I loved to read everything I could get my hands on, and I also wrote poetry and short stories. Beyond that, I spent a lot of time in my mom’s closet. My mom was very into clothing, jewelry, and bags and one of my favorite things to do was try on her things. I guess it makes sense that these two pieces of my personality would come together in my future career.
