Meet Pria Walker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pria Walker.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Pria Walker and I’m 25 years old. I opened Aurora Athletics, a competitive cheerleading facility, in October 2020 in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. I was a teacher for 3 years and realized I did not want to teach for the rest of my life. While I was a teacher, I coached the cheerleading after-school program at my school. I noticed the athletes in the area had so much talent but did not have a local competitive cheerleading gym to train at. I decided to open Aurora Athletics to give these athletes a home. We are now home to 30 competitive athletes. After one year of training, we are super excited for our first competition season!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My biggest struggle has been finding a supportive team for myself and my cheerleaders. It is so important for my athletes have good coaches that they can trust, relate to, and build relationships with. It’s also important to have a strong group of people behind the scenes at Aurora. Aurora’s team of coaches have been a vital part to our success. Shoutout Coach Kiera, Meghan, and Vashti for being my support team!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Cheerleading is my career and specialty. In 2018, I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary and Special Education from Towson University. I was a teacher for three years before I resigned to focus on my career in the cheerleading industry. Soon after resigning from my teaching job, I began a job at Stevenson University as the Head Cheerleading Coach.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Trust your gut and bet on yourself. A lot of people doubted that I would be able to create and uphold a new business in the pandemic. But I did and I am. You can’t let others’ doubts scare you away from following your own dreams.

Pria is an amazing cheerleading coach. She was one of my daughters favorite coaches when she was a all star cheerleader before she started high school cheer. I only wish Pria the best in her life and career. I know she will go far. My daughters Kiera and Kaelynn love and miss their coach Pria.
