Inspiring Conversations with Sarah Wilson of Chansaerae Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Wilson.

Hi Sarah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I left corporate American and returned to school at 37 to pursue my dreams of becoming an Interior Designer. I attended Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in LA and completed my design degree. I immediately launched my business. In 2017 I moved from California to Maryland and started my business anew.

I currently help clients bring new life to their spaces. I have a love for kitchens and baths but relish in whole-home projects as well. I think that homeowners should lean into their homes and make it a true reflection of who they are and how they live. Trends come and go but your home should always feel like you when you come in.

I believe in design of form, function, and beauty. Your home should look as good as it works. I help reimagine space in a way that most people can’t themselves.

Design is rooted deep in my soul. My Mom took me to her upholstery shop from a young age and taught me how to sew at 5. We spend long hours in fabric and furniture stores enjoying ourselves.

When someone entrusts me with their home, I want to blow their mind with possibilities.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. As mentioned, I launched my business right out of school and didn’t get any clients for 6 months. In that time, I lost my truck, became homeless, and spent many a night between a hotel room and sleeping on my office floor. Meanwhile, I was trying to maintain a sense of normalcy for my high school son.

I’ve worked for other designers while running my business to make ends meet and taken on projects that weren’t necessarily the best fit. I moved to Maryland to get a fresh start with my business and although it’s taken a couple of years it seems to be gaining traction.

Working for a builder here in DC has allowed me to showcase my design style and skill set in a way that has been excellent for my own business.

Sometimes it’s been difficult to get potential clients to understand that design is way more than what you see on HGTV. And sometimes they don’t understand the cost associated. But all in all, I still love what I do.

We’ve been impressed with Chansaerae Designs, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The name of my firm comes from the beginning of my sister’s and my name.

Chansaerae

I specialize in help people create homes that are a true reflection of them. Kitchens that function for the way they live their lives. Spaces that make them gasp for months after I’ve left. I help them stretch their designs sensibilities. I love working with busy professionals who just don’t have the time or desire to create an amazing space but need it badly.

What sets me apart? I am a product hound so I’m always looking for the best products for my clients, I’m never going to use the same thing with another client, I love unexpected moments in your home. No one will ever say I saw that in…

My services aren’t the most inexpensive but they are worth every dime. What I offer is a vision, an experience, and a lifestyle change. I’m offering you the best design possible for your budget. I’m offering to make you the Jones’s 🤣

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
People can work with me by reaching out to me via my website or Instagram. I love working with artisans to create moments for my clients.

Support me by mentioning my name in spaces where folks are looking for an excellent interior designer. Or spaces where they need one and don’t realize it.
