Today we’d like to introduce you to Namia G. Vance.
Hi Namia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m the founder of Suitable Attire Inc., a Nonprofit Organization and owner of Waist Beads by Reign. My love for youth began in a South Bronx community center many years ago, where I successfully spearheaded programs to encourage and empower youth. I understood then, as I do now, the importance of mentorship, community involvement, and opportunities to learn and grow in a supportive environment. Suitable Attire was created to bridge that gap and provide youth with professional attire for job and career opportunities.
Waist Beads by Reign started out as a hobby and turned into a successful small business. What I love about my waist bead business is meeting and connecting with some AMAZING women and empowering them to embrace and love their bodies.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Considering we’re in a pandemic, the biggest challenge for Suitable Attire has been fundraising and my ongoing struggle for Waist Beads by Reign has been production and recruiting someone that has the same passion for crafting to assist me because all waist beads are handmade. Although I haven’t found anyone yet, I’m hopeful that I will in the future.
In addition to working full-time, it’s necessary for me to have a healthy balance to maintain both businesses, it’s definitely a challenge but well worth it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Suitable Attire Inc. & Waist Beads by Reign?
My goal is to merge both profit and nonprofit businesses and to have a retail space by mid-2022. I intend to connect with Baltimore City youth through Baltimore City Public and Charter Schools and partnering with agencies like the Mayor’s Office of Employment Development and the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services, where we can provide youth with professional clothing and they can participate in job-readiness workshops free of charge. We will also teach youth interested in crafting, basic jewelry, and beading techniques to inspire them to become entrepreneurs as well.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to follow your passion, focus on honing your products/services, and know your target market. And most importantly, DO THE WORK and take breaks for self-care because it’s vital to your success.
