Today we’d like to introduce you to Gary Lawrence.
Hi Gary, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born in New York and moved to Philly when I was 10. I got the music bug from my pop. He use to DJ for Leaders of the New School. I was able to go to Howard University on a Basketball Scholarship and that’s where I started harnessing my musical talents. Started off making beats. I then moved to west Chester pa after transferring from Howard to WCUPA. I then met PNB Rock there because of my roommate who linked us. We then started working nonstop. I worked on about 6 tracks on RNB1 and I created the cover art. I then got a Job at the famous Batcave Studios in North Philly, PA and began working with the top talent in the city. Being an engineer I was able to slip in a few beats here and there. Eventually I moved to GA and started to work with a few artists and producers out there and then moved back to west Chester to continue working with artists that I met out there. This is around the time I began to rap myself. Always coaching other artist I eventually said let me try this. Over the next few years I developed my sound to what it is today. Especially around the time of Covid. I really locked in and have been going hard ever since.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Only struggles I see is sometimes your sound isnt for everyone. If found that you have to make music for you that you like and then the people will follow. “If you build it, they will come”
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a rapper, songwriter, engineer, and sound designer. Proud to have worked with Grammy winning Producer, Jahlil Beats. Lex Luger, Tone P (Wale Producer, Gillie The Kid, Pnb Rock, and up and coming artist Lihtz from Philly. I also won a song contest hosted by @Genius
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I take a cinematic approach to my music. I want to hear my music in the theaters one day and perform on big stages like Coachella and Rolling Loud
