Today we’d like to introduce you to Fletcher Cleaves.
Hi Fletcher, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Absolutely. Since this asks for your story, I’d make it personal and inspirational without making it sound like a résumé:
In 2009, I was a college football player with dreams of continuing my athletic career when my life changed in an instant. A distracted driver caused a car crash that left me paralyzed from the chest down. At 18 years old, I had to learn how to navigate life all over again.
What could have been the end of my story became the beginning of my purpose. With faith, family, perseverance, and a refusal to give up, I returned to college and earned my Computer Science degree from the University of Memphis in 2015. Along the way, I discovered that sharing my journey could help other people navigate challenges in their own lives.
That realization led me to motivational speaking and eventually to founding The Sky Is NOT the Limit, a company built around turning adversity into purpose through speaking, service, and advocacy.
Since then, I’ve delivered 400+ keynote presentations, given a TEDx talk, and had my story featured by ESPN and AT&T. I’ve spoken to students, corporations, organizations, and communities across the country.
Today, my mission is bigger than telling people what I overcame. I want people to look at my journey and recognize what they can overcome. My story began with an unexpected tragedy, but it has become a life centered on purpose, impact, and reminding others that The Sky Is NOT the Limit.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely! Here it is without the dashes:
Definitely not. The road has been filled with challenges, but each one has helped shape who I am today.
After my accident, I had to adjust to an entirely new way of living. Things I once took for granted like getting dressed, transferring into a car, traveling, or simply navigating an inaccessible building became obstacles I had to learn to overcome. Beyond the physical challenges, there were moments of frustration, uncertainty, and learning to accept that life might look different than I originally imagined.
Building my speaking career also wasn’t easy. I had to create opportunities, hear “no,” travel with a disability, and prove that my story was more than inspirational. It could genuinely impact people.
But those struggles became some of my greatest teachers. They taught me resilience, patience, creativity, faith, and the importance of continuing forward even when you can’t see the entire path ahead.
I’ve learned that adversity doesn’t have to be the end of your story. Sometimes, it becomes the very thing that leads you to your purpose.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work centers around helping people understand that their circumstances do not have to determine their future. As a motivational speaker and resilience coach, I specialize in overcoming adversity, resilience, personal development, leadership, and turning setbacks into purpose.
Through The Sky Is NOT the Limit, I’ve delivered more than 400 keynote presentations to schools, companies, organizations, and communities across the country. My journey has also taken me to the TEDx stage and allowed me to share my story through ESPN and AT&T.
What I’m most proud of, however, is the impact beyond the stage. I’ve had people tell me that my story encouraged them to seek help, make better choices, pursue their goals, or simply keep going during one of the hardest seasons of their lives. Those moments mean more to me than any recognition or accomplishment.
What sets me apart is that I don’t just speak about resilience. I live it every day. I bring authenticity, humor, energy, and vulnerability to every audience. My goal is for people to leave inspired, but more importantly, to leave believing that no matter what life puts in front of them, they still have the power to move forward.
That’s the heart behind everything I do and why I believe The Sky Is NOT the Limit.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I believe the motivational speaking and personal development industry is becoming more focused on authenticity, connection, and real-world impact. Audiences no longer just want someone to motivate them for an hour. They want speakers who can connect through real experiences and give them something they can carry into their everyday lives.
Over the next 5 to 10 years, I see technology and social media continuing to expand how speakers reach people, allowing our messages to go far beyond the stage. At the same time, I believe there will be an even greater need for messages around resilience, mental toughness, purpose, leadership, and navigating change.
For me, the future is about combining powerful storytelling with practical lessons and unforgettable experiences. No matter how much technology changes, people will always need hope, human connection, and reminders of what they are capable of.
