Today we’d like to introduce you to Devon Douglas.
Hi Devon, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey really started with soccer. I played competitively for 19 years, from youth leagues through college and eventually at the semi-professional level. Being around sports for so long gave me a genuine understanding of what it means to be an athlete, but it also sparked my interest in how those stories are captured and shared.
After graduating from Towson University in 2022, I began building my career in digital marketing and sports. I worked with organizations like Coppermine and Leveling the Playing Field in Baltimore, where I gained experience in marketing, content creation, and storytelling. I also had the opportunity to work on media projects involving organizations like the Baltimore Ravens, US Lacrosse, and the Aberdeen IronBirds, which really helped me develop my photography and videography skills.
That eventually led to the creation of SCORE Media Company. Originally, I launched the business as SCORE Advertising Agency, but I struggled to attract clients. I kept pushing and trying different things, and then I came across a soccer hype video that really changed my perspective. I remember thinking, “I can do that, and I can do it even better.”
That was the turning point. I decided to rebrand as SCORE Media Company and focus specifically on sports, particularly. Instead of trying to market to everyone, I started reaching out directly to players, teams, and clubs and showing them exactly how I could help tell their stories.
Now, after two years, I have secured four monthly retainer clients and work with others on a much smaller scale when needed. The content I created has helped clients increase their social media engagement and generate new opportunities. I’ve worked with many youth soccer clubs and fitness organizations across the DMV area.
Today, SCORE Media Company is really about combining my two biggest passions: sports and media. My goal is to create content that captures the emotion and energy of sports while helping athletes, teams, and clubs build their brands and tell their stories.
What I’ve learned throughout this journey is that sometimes the biggest opportunities come from being willing to take a different approach. I went from struggling to find clients to building a company around something I genuinely love, and now I’m excited to continue growing SCORE Media Company and helping more athletes and organizations bring their stories to life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I first started this, it was branded as ‘SCORE Advertising Agency’. One of my biggest challenges was simply getting clients. I was putting in the work, constantly reaching out and trying different approaches, but I wasn’t seeing the results I wanted. It was frustrating because I knew I had the skills to provide value, but I hadn’t figured out how to effectively position the business.
The turning point came when I saw an inspirational athlete hype video. I remember thinking, “I can do that, and I can do it even better.” That moment made me realize I needed to stop trying to be everything to everyone and focus on what I knew best: sports.
I rebranded the company as SCORE Media Company, narrowed my focus to soccer and sports content, and began reaching out directly to athletes, teams, and clubs. That shift completely changed the trajectory of the business. Within a few months, I started bringing on clients and building relationships throughout the Baltimore and DMV soccer community.
Even with that progress, running a business is still an ongoing challenge. Client acquisition and consistently marketing SCORE Media Company are things I continue to work on every day.
My next major goal is to make media days a more consistent and recognizable part of SCORE Media Company. I want to build it into a main line of service alongside the photography, videography, and social media content I already provide. With club and high school teams starting new seasons, I see a great opportunity to create excitement around their programs, give athletes professional content from the start, and help teams build their brands throughout the season. Ultimately, I want media days to become a consistent part of my business while continuing to grow the other services I already offer.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I own and operate SCORE Media Company, a sports media company specializing in photography, videography, Media Days, and social media content for athletes, teams, and clubs. I focus on creating content that not only looks great, but helps teams build their brands, create excitement, and connect with their communities.
What I’m most proud of is building something sustainable while bringing people I care about along for the journey. SCORE has become more than just my business. It’s a way to contribute to the sports community in the DMV while creating opportunities for all of us to grow.
What sets SCORE apart is collaboration. I’m not just providing a service and walking away. I want to build relationships, work alongside athletes, coaches, clubs, and other creatives, and create something that benefits everyone involved. Having been a high-level athlete myself, I can also relate to the people I serve and understand the importance of capturing their hard work and accomplishments.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
A lot of the credit for SCORE Media Company’s growth goes to the people who have trusted me with their teams, athletes, and organizations. My clients have played a huge role in helping me grow, not only by hiring me, but by giving me opportunities to build my portfolio, make connections, try new ideas, and continue improving my services.
I’ve also been fortunate to have people in my personal and professional circles who have encouraged me to keep going, especially during the early stages when building the company was challenging. But ultimately, SCORE has been built through collaboration. Every client, athlete, coach, and teammate I’ve worked with has contributed to the company in some way.
I’m proud that the people I serve are also helping me grow. As I help them showcase their teams, build their brands, and create excitement around their seasons, they’re giving me the opportunity to continue developing SCORE Media Company. It’s a relationship where everyone benefits, and that’s a big part of what makes this business meaningful to me.
