Today we’d like to introduce you to Chamira Dumas.
Hi Chamira, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Chamira, and I am a 28-year-old professional hairstylist with more than 10 years of experience in the beauty and hair industry. Entrepreneurship has always been a major part of my journey. Rather than following a traditional career path, I built my experience through doing hair, nails, and makeup before eventually discovering that hair was where my true passion and talent were.
My journey began in the eighth grade when I started doing my own hair. By the time I entered high school, I was not only styling my own hair but also doing hair for friends and family. Much of what I learned in the beginning came through trial and error, practicing on myself, and watching tutorials on YouTube. I have always been artistic and creative, and beauty and fashion gave me an outlet to express that creativity through hair, nails, makeup, and clothing.
In high school, I began experimenting with hair color and creating custom wigs for myself. People would constantly compliment my hair and ask, “Who does your hair?” When I told them I did it myself, they began asking if I could do theirs as well. By the ninth grade, I was taking clients from home after school. What started as something I naturally enjoyed quickly began developing into a business.
As my family and friends recognized my talent, I began to see the potential in pursuing hairstyling professionally. In the tenth grade, my cousin introduced me to an experienced stylist who gave me the opportunity to work alongside her as an assistant. Through that experience, I was introduced to the professional side of the beauty industry, assisting with hair and makeup for fashion shows and hair shows.
After graduating from high school, I attended cosmetology school and earned my professional license at 19 years old. I then began working in a salon, where I assisted experienced stylists while also building my own clientele. During that time, I formed valuable professional relationships and gained experience working on weddings, fashion shows, photoshoots, and hair shows. These opportunities helped broaden my knowledge, strengthen my skills, and give me a deeper understanding of the hair and beauty industry.
At 21, after approximately a year and a half in the salon, I decided to take the next step in my career and move into my own space. My clientele continued to grow, and at 22, I transitioned into a private salon suite, allowing me to further develop my brand and business as an independent stylist and entrepreneur.
Doing hair has always come naturally to me, but what makes this career meaningful is the impact I am able to have on my clients. I am deeply passionate about my craft and continuously work to expand my knowledge and perfect my skills. Beyond creating beautiful hairstyles, I strive to provide every client with a welcoming and safe environment where they feel comfortable, valued, and cared for.
For me, hairstyling is about more than hair—it is about creativity, confidence, self-expression, and transformation. One of the most rewarding parts of what I do is watching my clients leave my chair feeling more confident than when they arrived. I have been fortunate to turn something I genuinely love into a career and business, and I am excited to continue growing, learning, and making an impact through my craft.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Entrepreneurship comes with both highs and lows, and I have learned that there is no direct path to success. Throughout my journey as a hairstylist and business owner, I have faced many challenges that have pushed me to grow both personally and professionally.
One of the biggest transitions I experienced was becoming a mother. After having my daughter, I had to learn how to balance being a single mother with the responsibilities of running a business. This required me to restructure my schedule, establish new boundaries, and transition my clients to a schedule that worked best for both me and my child. Although it was an adjustment, it taught me the importance of creating a business that supports my life rather than one that consumes it.
Growing professionally as a hairstylist also came with challenges. Transitioning from cosmetology school into a salon environment taught me the importance of understanding my value. As my skills, experience, and demand increased, I had to become comfortable raising my prices to reflect the quality of my work. With those changes, I learned that not every client will continue with you as your business evolves—and that is a natural part of growth.
Establishing boundaries was another important lesson. In the beginning of my career, I wanted to accommodate and please everyone. Over time, I realized that being a successful business owner also means setting clear expectations, protecting my time, and understanding the type of clientele I want to serve. Learning to say no when necessary and creating policies that support both myself and my clients helped me become more confident and intentional as a professional.
One of my greatest challenges was learning the financial and business side of the beauty industry. Cosmetology school prepared me to become a hairstylist, but it did not fully prepare me to become a business owner. I had to educate myself on managing finances, creating structure, protecting my business, and building a stable foundation that would allow me to grow successfully over time.
I have also had to learn how to navigate the slower seasons of entrepreneurship. Whether it is building a clientele from the beginning, relocating and having to establish myself in a new area, or experiencing the natural slowdown that can occur during certain times of the year, those periods can sometimes feel frustrating and discouraging. However, they have taught me patience, consistency, adaptability, and the importance of planning ahead.
Every challenge I have faced has contributed to the entrepreneur and stylist I am today. My journey has taught me that success is not always a straight line. It requires resilience, discipline, continuous learning, and the willingness to adjust when necessary. Most importantly, I have learned that challenges are not simply setbacks—they can also be opportunities to strengthen yourself, improve your business, and prepare for the next level of growth.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Hair Lab Studio?
I am a versatile stylist best known for my expertise in hair coloring techniques and healthy hair care. Many of my clients say I have “growing hands” because of my dedication to maintaining and improving the health, strength, and growth of their hair. I also specialize in custom wigs and extensions, allowing me to offer a variety of services tailored to each client’s individual style and needs.
What truly sets me apart is my creativity, professionalism, and welcoming energy. I strive to create an environment where every client feels comfortable, respected, and cared for, regardless of what they may be experiencing personally. I want each appointment to feel like more than just a hair service—it should be a personalized experience where my clients can relax, feel confident, and leave feeling like the best version of themselves.
I am also very disciplined when it comes to protecting the integrity of my clients’ hair. While I always listen to what my clients want, I will not perform a service if I believe it could negatively impact the health of their hair or interfere with their long-term hair goals. My priority is not only achieving beautiful results but also educating my clients and helping them maintain healthy hair throughout their journey.
How do you think about happiness?
What brings me the most happiness is spending quality time with my daughter, family, and friends. I truly value creating meaningful memories with the people I love. I also enjoy traveling, exploring new experiences, and expressing myself through creative activities. Music is another important source of joy and inspiration in my life.
Professionally, one of the most rewarding parts of what I do is being able to bring confidence and light back into my clients. There is something incredibly fulfilling about watching a client leave my chair feeling beautiful, refreshed, and more confident than when they arrived. Knowing that my creativity and passion can positively impact how someone feels about themselves brings me a genuine sense of happiness and purpose.
